Is there a lack of social apps on the passport? I'm running facebook, facebook messenger and instagram android apps with notifications going right to the hub. What's the problem? Use the correct apks and you are set. I even use Google maps. All without the Google spy nonsense

Can you tell me the versions of the apks of the apps you mention? Cause I haven't found till now the correct versions of Instagram and fb.

    Okay. Long time, no see.

I just switched to the KeyOne. I just needed some apps.

Mostly for my fitness armband and crypto related apps.

Now, after 3 months I just saw a fun video about someone using a BlackBerry Passport in 2018.

So, I just put it out the drawer and there it is. Instant fun and love!!

Just using the calendar or the notes app makes me wanna trash the KeyOne.

Using the calender is far better than the ones on any Android or the bb Android one. Swiping to the left and you can see the yearly view!!

Or the notes app wants me to write down my ideas!! Like I did it when BB10 came out. I feel far way more secure than doing that on the KeyOne.

The fonts, the keyboard, real hub? Damn.

I don't use any social media. I am very minimalist.

Thinking about going back to the passport again.

    It is a sheer beauty.

Whats App is working well and Chrome also but the native browser is good enough for my needs.

But when most people's online lives are focused on browsing, IM, social media, and business/personal/specialised app consumption (without workarounds), my message is consistent and understandable to the layman.
Then simply say it's not a phone for most people, who care about third-party apps. That's accurate.

My wife switched to BB10 from iPhone in 2015, and was thrilled that it was so much more efficient and streamlined. I would still suggest to anyone who wants to get off the app merry-go-round and who isn't tied to Google Apps beyond Gmail, Google calendar and contacts that BB10 night be a great alternative.

On the other hand, if someone needs apps that don't work on BB10 without workarounds, then I would tell them to pass and get an Android or iPhone.

    Email
    Calendar
    Contacts
    Tasks (except Google)
    Kindle and ePub books
    Downloaded and browser-based audio
FM radio (on Passport and Z30)
    Downloaded and browser-based video
    SMS
    Phone
Camera and Video (perfectly fine for many people)
Web browser for almost all conservatively coded sites
    Calculator
    Compass
    Bluetooth
    NFC
    Best-in-class keyboards (VKB and PKB)
    Best-in-class gesture navigation
    Hub with Peek and Flow
    Etc.

I know you think third-party apps are more important than all these "boring" smartphone basics, but Bb10 still offers many of the fundamental smartphone features that millions of people actually need.

I'm arguing some nuances with you, and I know you appreciate all of the above as a BB10 veteran, but I really can run a business in 2018 with employees, clients, and an Enterprise MS Exchange server implementation on BB10 with no problem at all. I think you are too dismissive sometimes of the fact that there really are many people who, while they can live with iOS or Android just fine, can do everything they actually want and need to do on BB10.

You dug up a conversation from early April that stemmed from my recommendation to steer away from the Passport (in 2018) unless they don't do a whole lot more than email.

Without going through a lengthy explanation, I stand by my rough premise.

I know you do. And it's a reasonable, conservative recommendation. I just think it's an oversimplification for a significant minority of people who don't actually enjoy using their Android/iOS phones.

Better keyboard, 1:1 ratio screen, better quality( both suffer some certain issue, but Keyone does lose as I have at least tens of friends with Keyone and they are reporting different issues.), better multi task, fluent user interface, better off without having to help Google datamine, better speaker, much more iconic when you see one.

    Just to name a few.

Keyone is good, but Passport is better, not in every way but in certain ways, which happen to be what I care about.

There always something that drew me back to the passport.

The keyboard is way better. I love the combo of 3 row hardware and virtual one on top. The bigger buttons and clickiness is real premium. No distraction. Just the letters on one button.

The calendar is what I missed also. The one on Keyone is a joke. UX madness. I feel at home at the BB10 calendar.

I write more notes on the Passport. It is just pure joy.

And, without sounding arrogant, I like having a smartphone that does not look like 99% of the market today.

    The Bauhaus design is ace.

    I have fun right now.

My Rogers dealer has a brand new Passport in stock, but they want north of $300 for it...and as it's not in the same system as current phones I can't apply my hardware discount to it or I would have jumped on it...my Passport's battery is getting a little tired...and some replacements online are either too $$$ or cheap knock offs...

    Ha, this phone is addictive.

Had my Key1 on. Just yesterday I switched my new 128GB micro SD card and SIM inside the passport again.

Shame, that this had not evolved. Enjoying my music with wireless headsets. I had a call via the great speakers.

And typing is just pur fun.

Hard to go back on the Key1.

And the keyboard on the Key2 looks nice. But way too expensive.

But the Passport was a major evolutionary step in BlackBerry phones, at least that's how I feel. It brought me back to BlackBerry. The Key² is a just a nice upgrade of the KEYᵒⁿᵉ.

The way I look at the Passport and the SE version is that it had excellent value.

I believe the launch price was $499 US and $550 respectively. Considering the hardware, the specs which were fairly high end at the time (2014)

Those devices had excellent build quality and we're very unique designs.

I think globally phone prices have gone up a lot so that a lot of these manufacturers can actually turn a profit even those some of the spec prices might have come down for things such as ram, etc.

I do think that BlackBerry Mobile priced the KEY 2 a little too high, I understand a lot of the rational and the costs associated with it but still, $650? I would have kept the price the same to try to rebuild the fan base and the move additional product. At $499 these phones would sell a lot, you would have a lot of people who are willing to try something different.

At $650, which in dollar terms, isn't significant, it's an item that is negative and is mentioned in almost all the reviews and on the BlackBerry fan sites like this. Everybody loves a deal and people buy on deals!

Is that "loyal fan base" really profitable? They need to appeal to former BB users/enterprise/business customers, not just BB10 die hards.

    Dear BlackBerry fans,

I just went to the store and bought a brandnew BlackBerry Passport for just 100 Euro yesterday.

It was a hard decision since I am happy with my KeyOne. But when I saw the price I thought about the glory days of BB10 and the fun we had here.

I watched youtube videos and it just felt good. The design inspired by the building in Toronto from Mies van der Rohe, the keyboard and the unique design. As a designer myself I need things which communicate my personality. I can't imagine having things everybody have.

I am also a minimalist. Seeing the people glued to these smartphones I said to myself, that I don't wanna spend so much time on a device. So I don't need social media apps. It is a waste of time for me and very artificial. If you do business with social media, perfect. But otherwise it is not for me. Too much drama.

I installed whatsapp with APK. Works good. Otherwise I use BBM. Browser works as well the Maps app. And the Keyboard!!! And the user interface.

It is like driving a Jaguar instead of a Nissan Micra. The quality is premium. The design? Flawless. You can't compare the KeyOne with it.

I will test it for a month. If it won't work, I have my KeyOne on the side.

As a minimalist I think this could work out very well. I just wanna be in contact with my peers, family and beloved ones, taking pictures, listen to music, mail and calendar.

The UI of the calendar on the KeyOne is horrible. The one on the passport is like coming home. Speaker quality is ace.

I feel I can have a lot of fun with it. It is like coming home.

I really don't need gazillion of apps. Less is more.

If you think about getting one in 2018 and love being minimalist, this could be the phone to go.

I will keep you updated guys.

    Posted via CB10
Very nice! I still break out the Passport from time to time and it is indeed like coming home. BB os10 is fantastic and the device compared to the KeyOne is so much more premium. Still have Face10 for Facebook which is usable , inst10 for Instagram and a good twitter app plus WhatsApp. So you can still do social media on the passport. No Snapchat but I’m not 16 so no need for that. It’s still an amazing device !! Enjoy it!

I have nothing better to do at the moment, so I'll bite.

For me personally, I need very powerful file management - something BB10 does not offer. I need integrated access to webdav, ftp, Mega, LAN, DropBox, etc.

I also require access to my Office365 account and the entire MS Office Suite.

I need a native browser to sync with my desktop and laptop browsers.

I also use a paid VPN service not available on BB10.

None of the 3 major music streaming services - Play Music, Apple Music, and Spotify are natively available on BB10, and I use the first one extensively.

I also regularly work remotely and need access to the Synology suite of apps and services, and my VNC client.

I interact with a number of financial service and travel service companies that do not have BB10 apps, nor have full-featured mobile Web equivalents.

I also require the use a couple of mobile payment methods not available on BB10.

Although I don't personally suffer from the following, many others consider these dealbreakers:

    - lack of EMM clients (ex: AirWatch, the largest in terms of market share), lack of specialised medical software to monitor health issues, lack of corporate collaboration tools like Slack, etc, etc.

These are just off the top of my head.
Wow. Blackberry should have done more to atract developers to the platform, because users needs evolve. Though I like BB10, I found it to be lacking not only in apps but services when compared to BBOS. I gave up my 9900 bold kicking and screaming when the Q10 came out. Becuase there were apps and services that I didn't want to let go of. Though they left some users behind they didn't improve that much either. In order to bring those users back or attract new ones

They did tons of work on that front, but ultimately developers had no need for a third ecosystem.
