I was curious as I was looking in all the nooks and cranies of my new bold. How can I delete these things I'll never use?
I'm new to BB but I've been able to delete other apps after I found I did not like them. I've tried doing it from the BB itself and from the desktop manager.
One note is I noticed them when I downloaded a theme. Since then I've deleted that theme I'm now using "beautiful dissaster" but they have not gone away.

Any tips leading to the death of these would rock my socks off.

They are pushed down by your carrier. Make a folder, move them into said folder, hide the folder.

Do they eat up memory or are they just passive?

I think that the memory they take up is pretty much negligible.

Quite right. They are merely launchers that take you to sites to buy things.
