Good question. I personally don't have an answer for you but I would also like to know. I love and use bbm all the time.

Because it's e-mail format and because some people don't want another to
know that they've read their message. I use BBM but others prefer PIN.
It's just a preference.
i prefer bbm ... but if you dont want ppl to add you , and just msg u ... u'll use it , it sux and i prefer emails :D you cant attach files or vids with PIN messages
PIN messaging is basically like email without an email provider. The email isn't stored then forwarded like if you were using your pop, exchange, or imap mail account. PIN is asynchronous in that you are not expecting an immediate reply like you do with BBM or other real time chatting service. Its faster than sending an email, but is limited to only BB users, and it has delivery confirmation and is automatically taged "red" - high priority. Basically its like txting except with way more characters and probably much more secure, and delivery confirmation. I prefer PIN over txt for these reasons. Again, but only available with other BB users.

Learn something new every day, I didn't know about PIN messaging.
I'm a heavy BBM user.
everyday something new to learn . love it
one thing that you should know about PIN messages is that if you are talking to someone on a BES those messages might be recorded. also, some people on a BES have them blocked by security policy. just a heads up.
i may be wrong, but i think BBM can be disabled via IT security policy while leaving PIN messages available.
correct just depends on what the company sets up. but you can't really track BBM messages.
I thought BBM and PIN messaging were the same thing. I know what BB messenger is but what is Pin messaging? Thanks
I love PIN and never use BBM. Longer messages are possible, it's not all "c u l8tr" instant message ugliness, you get a little feedback getting a confirmation that the message has arrived in the recipient's mailbox but no info about when it is read (I do prefer having a little privacy), but if you are chatting live it is as fast as BBM.
As stated, messages come in RED in your inbox. Kinda cool.
I use PIN messages only with very close friends.

BBM uses PIN messaging technology, but isn't the same as just a PIN message. a PIN message resembles a text/email and is delivered to your messages folder.
i used to use PIN, but its blocked on my BES so no longer. Also you can make it not red, but it seems like you like it that way :D
A lot of the people I work with didn't grow up with Instant Messaging so they're more comfortable with PINs as quasi emails. Also:
-In order to send a message to someone via BBM, they have to accept you. If a new guy enters our group and I've been given his or her PIN by someone else, I can send that new person a message with pertinent information instantly with a PIN message instead of waiting for he/she to accept me as a BBM contact.
-Until recently, it wasn't possible (from what I can tell) to send multiple contacts the same message at once with BBM, while it's easy to add more recipients on PINs.
-You can CC and BCC on PINs.
-I can PIN someone some particular info and then they can easily forward that PIN message off as a text or email to someone else.
They use the same technology, but they each have their benefits.
Thanks for clarifying the differences mattglobal.
I doubt PIN will ever be necessary for me to use.

Yah - whether it's age or personality or what, I just don't find instant messaging appealing. And it's really not good - in my opinion - for a real conversation, with some length and depth. To me, BBM is about as appealing as Twitter.
Good thing the Blackberry has something for everyone!

I use BBM and don't use too much e-lingo, mostly just "lol's". I also have also always tried to use proper grammar in texts, IM's and BB messages. I have personally always hated the childish sounding e-lingo.
I did not know that about PIN's. You learn something new everyday!
Yes, I don't get why we would use a pin message when we can just BBM...?
Comparing bbm to twitter is like comparing well I can't come up with something so far off.
A tweet is restricted to 140 characters like a text message, but is readable by everyone unless you make your twitter account private.
bbm is a conversation between 2 people. It isn't public, nor is it restrictive in the size of the message.

I never realized people actually used PIN messaging...
A lot of people I work with aren't fans of IM. PINs are easy.
When I send a test pin to my phone from my girl's phone, it still shows up the name of the previous owner on her phone. Anyway to change this ???
MDotA you, or better still, the previous owner needs to get the PIN released. Call the carrier and see if they can help you out with RIM, as they are the ones who do the releasing.
In OS 7 [9900 Bold] the pin will transfer new or edited contacts to another pin regardless of where you are. That is a great feature!!! Now that I have a Passport, PIN is not available for this function and BBM is. I do not like BBM as the other party has to agree to receive messages from you FIRST which is a pain in the assets.
Blackberry management screwed up big time on this decision. DO YOU HEAR ME BB PRODUCT DEV? Hope they will add Pin in this area [I have 10.3.0.903 which is the last & current official upgrade] on one of the next 10.3 upgrades.
