Why isn't my User ID being accepted?

Is there a difference between a Blackberry User ID and the ID you need to set up email accounts?

I had no luck signing in to my old account, and on this new device I created a new User ID and password, from the online site.

Now when I go into SETTINGS and EMAIL ACCOUNTS, I'm prompted for a User ID/Password, and it rejects my email address, with this message: "The user name is invalid. A user name must be at least 4 characters."

Huh?

This is a Style, so it's the 6 OS.

EDIT: I think I may need to wipe this device, because it was pre-owned and I doubt they did a full factory reset. So, I will update.

you don't need an id to set up email except for your account id
