I have a Bold 9900 on Orange and on 'About Device Versions' it says:
7.0 Bundle 1672 (v7.0.0.353, Platform 5.0.0.544)
Is my BB up to date or can I download a UK update from somewhere? I've heard a lot about a .440 version or something? Is this the latest OS and where would I be able to download it for a UK BB?
thats the latest version of the software by your service provider, there is however .439 and .440 avail from other carriers. I would suggest the .439 it seemed to be more stable, its by WIND in Canada but you wont know the difference.

I'm also in the UK and I'm currently running .440 which for me is much more stable than the stock .353
FYI I've just seen that WIND have released an official OS .474
