For instance, if I purchase an old Bberry 7250 off of ebay was BBM around back then? Or was Blackberry Messenger a newer addition to their phones, thereby making only the newer Bberries BBM capable (e.g. Curve 8330 and up)??

What was the first blackberry to have BBM capability>?

If the phone is 4.2 OS or above then BBM will work. If it's not on the phone
    itself it can be installed.

I have a 7250 that runs BBM just fine. As forever29, if OS 4.2 is on there you can put BBM on the 7250 via the app loader.

so basically it's just a matter of hooking the bberry up to your PC via a USB and updating the OS on blackberry.com?

Directions on upgrading the OS can be found here: http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101...ting-system-os

I just looked at my 7250 and it is actually running OS 4.1 with BBM. Simply go to your carrier's web-site to download the latest OS for your 7250 and make sure that BBM is checked to be installed during the upgrade process following the directions linked above.
