I am about to reload the latest OS for my 8320, and I am curious if it's better to wipe and then reload the OS, or just do the reload with the BB as it is... any opinions?

I normally just reload, without wiping the existing OS first. The App Loader wipes the device automatically, before installing the new OS. The "Upgrade / Downgrade Procedure" in my sig is a good reference.
I have never wiped, just loaded on top of the old os.
Same here... I used to wipe then reload on my own with my 8320, but recently with my 9700 I've just let the DM do all the work and put everything back how it was.

well, now i know... although I used shrink-a-os as well which save d me space i beleive... im new to the os upgrade stuff for bb
I usually wipe it. It just seems I have fewer bugs after a full wipe and install. Also, I like being able to restore just those databases I choose. I usually only restore messages, phone logs and browser favorites. I like starting with a fresh clean system.
I prefer to wipe it using JL_Cmder as I've found doing an in-place upgrade results in some "stuff" being left behind that creates issues with some apps.
Well, if I install too many beta OS on my 8900 so then best method is wipe it.
1. backups everything.
2. nuke it.
3. clean install beta OS top of it.
4. restore everything, if third-party apps are working or not.
5. BAM !

Ok, so I went the wipe way. In my opinion, it's helped my Curve to perform better after loading the OS. And the OS loading process itself was pretty fast compared to having an OS already installed.
It does take a while to restore all your apps and preferences though, but I can clearly see rhe benefit in wiping!
I have done it both ways over the years, but I'm with Jeff - a pretty experienced user, and I never wipe anymore - there's no difference. Apploader does a full wipe as part of the install process.

I only wipe my device if I am having issues or rollingback. Going forward I never do a wipe leak to leak. Now when going from a leak to an official load, I may or may not do a wipe - it just depends on how the show goes...
Either way, get accustomed to screen 507! Get some good wipes and a can of lysol to clean the stains out of your chair. Once you do it a few times, all that goes away - like overclocking your PC the first time and getting a BSOD.

Just load the firmware and let the Apploader do it's thing. The only time a wipe is in order is when you're having serious issues that can't otherwise be resolved thru other steps.
I had to relaod the OS, but then have a small frustrating tiny clock with its revolving hands very minute or so. I will reload again but I prefer to wipe first.
Kindly tell me in simple english how to do it, and if external program is needed , from where to get.

Sorry might be a little lead but always wipe everything then reload OS. At least we start 'fresh'. Just something I always do :)
Although many say that there is no need to wipe then reload as apploader automatically does the wipe. I personally ALWAYS manually wipe using BBSAK as I don't need any applications to be backed up or anything. I want my phone to start as if it was brand new, then I will manually restore my contacts and emails
That's the difference. App Loader backs up and restores third party apps and user data. Wiping will remove these and the device ends up with a just the default factory install, User data has to be restored manually and applications must be reinstalled as necessary.
That is exactly what happened to me. I installed the OS twice with the loader, but always have the same corrupted OS I had before.
When I used BBSAK to wipe and install , I disposed of all my problems.
The wipe is very important if you have problems with the exsisting OS. Loading the OS on top of the old one, does not really remove some problems.
There is no "load on top" for the OS. Each install starts as a clean platform with all modules freshly loaded to factory-new condition. The problems start when corrupted PIM data or incompatible/buggy third party applications are restored.
You are right. I meant the new OS will wipe/replace the old one.
However, this did not happen to twice. I only removed my corrupted OS by wiping it first.
Ditto with me. Some people swear a wipe and reload works better, but I think that just an unnecessary step.

The best way around is perform a total backup and wipe the device to load a new OS. Swipe and reload works much better!
