Here is my situation:
My dad gave me his old blackberry bold 9000. I did a factory reset on it, and have no data plan through ATT. My dad used to have a data plan with it though.

how can i get these "books" that I require, or do I not need the books? I'm of course also on a separate SIM card.

Also, I know there is software out there to mimic messengers for PC, is it possible to get a third party BBM messenger and use that via Wifi?

Guys, i have enabled BIS on my 9300, but no data plan, and i use everything over wifi. BBM works, App world works....
And according to network traffic control, it goes over wifi. Doesn't use cell data.

why does everyone keep saying you need a data plan to use bbm?, yet telus told me as long as you have wifi you can use bbm & it is free?

Well its another way for them to push data plans...
Again, i have no data plan, just BIS enabled, and take everything over wifi.

just tried using wifi without my sim card in the phone and bbm DID NOT work

You need a data plan requisitioned on your account to be able to use BBM. It will work on WiFi only if you have this. If you don't have an active data plan on your account, BBM will not work.

well i have a data plan on the account that was working with the blackberry then i took the sim out and tried wifi and it didnt work

The services are tied to the SIM card, not the handset.
