shortcut entering number in messages/memopad

Any shortcut key how to enter a number into text/email/memopad rather than pressing alt(*) key then pressing number.

if you hit alt then caps it locks onto number

Alt and left caps is num lock

Alt and right caps is caps locks.

Just want to specify so no one gets confused
