I have 42. The number goes up and down. I have a lot of techy friends that when their phones break they always have a blackberry backup.

If its always there for you wouldn't you think it would be your #1 choice?

look at this other way around. there is still 43 left despite all rim promisses, delays and missteps. people will come back, many have sweet spot for rim but they are tired waiting.

I went from 0 to 5 in 4 months. Once bb10 comes out I expect to see an increase in BBM contacts but for now 5 is fine. The main benefit for me now is 4 of them live out of the country.

Try living in Jakarta, Indonesia my friend. I have more than 200 bbm contacts and I'm quite picky in giving/sharing my pin.

I absolutely don't know why but Indonesians are crazy about bb and bbm.

Around 2$ for 1 month BBM+FB+Twitter (no email push) data plan
12$ for 1 month full BIS
most of my friends are using the 2$ one, I guess that's why

Here is my experience... (I posted about this briefly on another thread).

And my caveat to the following observation is; I love the BBM.

I am back on BB after a 2 year mistake called AnDroid. During the time I was off BB several people I knew who were BBM users also switched away from BB. So when I returned (thank God for my stroke of genius decision to return) there were fewer folks to connect on BBM with.

MORE to the point is that several BB owners I know just don't use BBM. They "don't see the point" of using it when straight up texting messaging works for them.

Their argument is that just about everyone they know is not a BB user so the vast majority of their action is to just go to the text feature their device has since everyone including BB users will get the message.

So the summary and reality of that is that they have few (and dwindling) BB using acquaintances see opening and or using BBM as an "unnecessary" application.

On some level I get that. I absolutely know the advantages of the BBM and personally like and want to use it however out of the approximately 300 contacts in my phone only 7 are BB users and only 3 of them use BBM to text me.

Its a practicality issue complicated by the loss of BB owners, not anything more.

Still holding around 36. Just yesterday I was typing an SMS to a friend with an iPhone and it started breaking the message into two parts and I was like seriously?

I will take BBM anyday over that nonsense.

I'm down to 2 USA contacts and 2 Latin American contacts. Every one else I know is on IPhone or Android so I just text them.

BlackBerry is our first smartphone. I started with zero coz I don't know even know what the heck is BBM and BIS? Then we went back to our home country and everyone is so gaga about BBM and PINS, then we bought another BB for my partner so we could try it out, then we got hooked on BBM. Now we are planning to give our families a BB just for BBM coz we want a constant and secure communication coz we are working overseas.

We just bought a PlayBook for our daughter which I'm hoping will have a native BBM soon. Lately we encouraged our friends on getting a PB, we sold 2 64gb and 1 32gb in just 24hrs, we're glad that its their first tablet.

To the OP : I don't need the whole world with me on BBM, Facebook can handle them. We on the other hand just want our family and trusted circles on it.

I never really used BBM that much.
I had maybe 20 contacts. They were all people in my old Twitter back in 2009-2010. When I left my 8530 for the Epic, then comeback to BB with the Curve 3G...they were all gone

But I have iMessage now. To me, it's faster than BBM ever was.
