Depends on what you're wiping for. To load an OS5 coming from an OS4.8, most likely, but not always. To reload the same OS you'll have to do a full wipe. I find a full wipe almost always unnecessary. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

Klinton, there's no need for you to wipe at all. Me, I would use 862. Sorry I'm late getting back.

What is the proper procedure for me to upgrade a Blackberry 8520. I want to upgrade to OS5 from OS4.6. Also, I got DM6 but I'm wondering if I'm supposed to use DM5 instead.

    Thanks!

Not a fan of DM6, but it shouldn't be an issue. My procedure is more a blend of the two listed here, without the wipe.

It's normal for DM to suggest upgrades when you connect. I just always hit cancel. It should still let you go to Application Loader and add/delete. If you're using DM6 it could be a bit challenging. I'd also disable the internet on your PC before opening DM.

Not exactly, but close. Loader.exe will always install the latest OS it finds on your PC. You have the delete the current version from your PC, then run Loader.exe. It will detect that the OS installed on the PC is an earlier version than the OS on the phone, and ask if you want to downgrade. If you upgraded and didn't keep the exe for your previous OS version, you may have a hard time finding it. The carriers only host the latest release on their sites.

what difference does the upgrade procedure have if it is made in a mac?

It *might work if you are using one of the PC emulator's that can run a windows program. You have to be able to install the BlackBerry OS, which is a Windows-only exe, on the computer. Your safest bet is to borrow a friend's PC.

After doing that, can I still use my Mac desktop manager? and if I have problems with OS 6 canI downgrade it from the desktop manager for Mac? does OS 6 run well on the bold 9700?

You can use the Mac Desktop Manager to sync files. Downgrading will work the same way as upgrading. You'll still have to install OS 5.x.y.z on a PC. I can't help you with OS 6 on a 9700, since I've used neither. There are several OS 6 threads in the 9700 forum.

Ran 6 on my 9700 for a few days, before switching to a 9650. It's a squeeze, but worked surprisingly well all things considered. If you're a real power user, just expect to overload your RAM, and crash on occasion. It seems to sub some of the ROM to page file, so you'll see "memory leak". Reboot once a day, keep open apps to a minimum, and I'll bet you find it awesome. The difference from 4.5 to 5.0 was good, the change from 5.0 to 6.0 is vast.

Newbie here. I've done the following steps which I found on the first page

    Basic Procedure (Beginners)

    1. Backup Phone in DesktopManager.
    2. Unplug phone and close DM.
    3. Install new OS .exe file.
    4. Plug phone back into PC and let drivers install.
    5. Launch DM and proceed with update of OS.
    6. Make sure you pick Backup Data and Apps (including Messages) during the backup!!!
    7. DO NOT under any circumstance unplug the phone or use the PC while the update is in progress. Do not let screen saver kick in either.
    8. Unplug and use phone ONLY once the upgrade procedure states that it's finished by the DM update software on the screen.
I've completed steps 1-3 successfully, but when I try to plug my phone back in, nothing happens?

Following the first post should get you back up. Run loader.exe, install the OS, open DM and restore the backup you made.

OK this is far from my first upgrade but when I run AppLoader or DM the software I want to upgrade to doesn't show up. I followed all of the steps exactly (as usual) but this is the 1st time this has happened. My 9650 currently has the 507 error. Someone please help. Also I tried uninstalling the software and reinstalling. Still no luck.
