I've been using Willyboy's hybrids since they first came out and usually did find a increase of stability and performance over most OS's.

But all this talk about a OS6 hybrid I think is just bull and should of been called v5.3 and never in a million years a OS6.

If the hybrid doesn't look like OS6, if it doesn't have any new OS6 features, and if the files are only in there to help stabilize the hybrid build of a OS5 base then its definitely not a OS6 hybrid and should never have been marketed or promoted as such and its definitely that simple.

The hybrid is named v6 actually not OS6. He named it this to differentiate it from hybrids that were purely 5.0 files. As he has said this is just a little taste of what is to come (ie v6.1...). He only dropped 20 cods in this build but surely has more running on his own devices. Also what ranon said is true, he can name it whatever he feels like because he built it.

We are not actively considering banning hybrids, but the recent squabbling and money grubbing over payments and "donations" has forced a review. The concept of CrackBerry is community involvement and open access. We don't charge for access, don't support a "premium area", and don't allow free advertising to create a gain for others. Basically, members are supposed to share, not use the site for financial gain.

Rather than banning hybrids immediately, Forum Managers have accepted that hybrids can be handled in a similar way to themes - except that they can't generate payments because that would infringe RIM's intellectual property rights in the original files. The existing forum rules seem to cover this adequately so a short summary of the most relevant parts and how they apply for hybrids has been posted, http://forums.crackberry.com/f95/bet...elines-485091/

We will be sending a heads-up PM to the hybrid builders over this weekend. Newly posted hybrid threads are expected to follow the guidelines immediately. Reasonable time will be allowed for existing threads to be modified by the posters, rather than taking them down immediately.

*sigh* Honestly, I can understand why the moderators here consider dropping the whole hybrid section. Let's look at this realistically.

This whole thing started off in a very innocent, very community-based way; BlackBerry enthusiasts who don't mind dabbling decided to incorporate newer or older files to fix problems or add features. They then shared their ideas and works with others here- absolutely nothing wrong with that. This has truly helped many people.

Then some people decide, hey, I can do this too! But the recognition or community effort isn't enough for them, they'd like some cash too. So they put up donation links. We think... well, okay, I guess they do put some effort into their releases, so their time is worth something, right?

But it doesn't stop there. With multiple hybrid builders, it stops being about fun, or solving problems, or anything remotely friendly. Suddenly it's a competition, complete with slander, VIP-only pay-access builds, trash talk and pages upon pages of ill will. The fun, free community becomes some kiddie forum war, and the best BB forum on the web turns into a joke.

C'mon, guys. Remember our roots. This isn't a pissing contest, a popularity contest, or a money-making scheme. This is a place for users to help other users with a shared passion- BlackBerry phones. Seriously, what is the point of releasing hybrids less than a week after a leak? What's being fixed? Isn't it just pushing newer version numbers, trying to get more 'donations' (some of which are forced, ie VIP) before the other guys post something up? Really, this is silly. It's a phone for cris'sakes. All this hatred and spite over some blended Rim files? Yeah, we get it. You learned what to copy and paste over, and tested a few things. That's wonderful. No, most people haven't taken the time and effort to learn it. But it's not rocket science, and they could. Stop acting like you're King of this little hill, and getting all angry when anyone else dares post anything.

I'm a nobody here, but in my opinion, the rules should specifically prohibit this counterproductive cash-seeking down-talking behavior, and warn/ban anyone found doing it. Most of us are adults here; all of us should act like it. There's plenty of other places on the web for it anyway. You don't usually see this sort of thing in the Theme or App sections- authors there (actual authors, not masters of the copy/paste) don't feel the need to flame anyone else's work. They either work well and are popular, or they aren't, and need improvement. I've yet to see someone singled out and picked on because their app or theme isn't "legit" enough, like has happened here within the past day or two

Sorry if I offended anyone, but I had to get this off my chest. We have some friendly, talented people here and I for one don't want to see this section die off or turn ugly. Thanks for those who continue to contribute.

I think the issue with this thread is, people are treating Dripht and Willy as if the are marketing their site in here. No one is trying to sell memberships to their site or charge for their hybrids in here.

I can see both sides of the argument.

And I think either way this will always end up in a arms race even if payment sections aren't included.

CharredPC also makes some great arguments and I'm entirely in agreement with a leak comes out then within days we have a 'better' hybrid when the OS's bug's haven't been found or properly identified. I think some people will add value to the OS's with well thought out selection of files, the rest will just be copying and pasting whilst not really understanding what they are really doing.

I am a little confused though, why just 20 of the 600 files? What are the improvements with those files and what do they relate too?

Because (1) in order to get the 6.0 hybrids you have to pay, and (2) it's not a BBOS 6 Java/radio file, it's just supporting files.

That's what most of you got it wrong!

VIPs get things BEFORE everybody has access to it (and they get to play with them for a week or so). But then it goes public. WANNA pay for VIP? Go ahead. Do you NEED to? Nope. Myself I don't mind it a bit since most of the time, when the release goes public, most of the bugs have alreay been patched... Thanks VIPs.

I am not a VIP and I have been running WB's hybrids since he released his 1st 8520 version.

i must say that if it's marketing or not, i don't like the idea of paying for a hybrid.
there's always a Fixes/findings thread where there's issues with hybrids.
this forrum is supposed to be about sharing...
i can understand wanting clicks on your site,
plus dropping something like this guarantees instant legendary status

basically, i will pass on paying for (in my experience) an unknown hybridder's untested hybrid.

then, someone mentioned the os6 files are stolen...
aren't all the leaks stolen anywayz?
    if it's there, use it!

For some reason everybody like to get a free stuff and expect Mother Teresa's to do it often and on time and of course for FREE. And here we are still getting it however what upsets some is that they are not the first to get it... are we bunch of socialist here? Willy spends time and needs to have some compensation for it. And if you are the one who wants to support his work, wouldn't you like to get some benefits?
We have option to choose if time has any value for us?
Seems like it does but only for us since we want to get new stuff it first but has no value for others like Willy or VIPs?
Be fair, enjoy what we have and stop being jealous and stingy After all nothing is free in this world.

    I'm sorry, I'm at a lose here.

    1. From what I've read, it seems people are reading a few posts, then responding either in support or vehemence. That's anyone right, to a point (depending, in this case, on the site's rules), but has anyone read that the hybrids on that site become available to EVERYONE one to two weeks after the VIPs get first crack?

    2. From what I've read (and know), VIPs are paying a one-time fee (depending on which membership tier you choose) to support the developers and the site, NOT for EARLY hybrid access (everyone else gets them a few weeks later if they do not or cannot [which was my case] support them then or have no desire to do so). That is a benefit (besides many others) they (the VIPs) receive for supporting hybrid developers on that site. Some are asking, why not leave it to a donation structure? I have no idea and that's a question best asked to the developers on that site.

    3. I think a lot of people think business websites are free. I'm sorry to inform you of this but they are not. They cost cold hard cash. If the VIPs wish to support that site with THEIR hard earned dollars because they think the work of the developers is worth it, let them do so. If you cannot afford to or (as many Crackberry members have stated) have no desire to do so in anyway shape or form whatsoever, you still get the hybrids FREE in two weeks. This means, you have to be patient (this is HARD for most of us, myself included; believe me, I know! I loathe being patient!). But as there are so many great hybrid builders on this site and many other websites, this should not be a problem.

Now, if it's just about getting the latest and greatest now, now, now, for free!, with no waiting, then in that case, if the mods allow it, please continue.

I'm running the 9630 hybrid from that site, I'll post what I posted there to get the thread back on track.

"Loaded up. It's smooth! Only two battery pulls. Had to re-download QuickLaunch. Okay, Speedtest numbers are in max. speed. dl - 2562.18; upload - 83.11. I have no idea how good that is but there you go. Browser has about 1 sec of avg. lag, which is spectacular! For the memory peps, I'm running 117MB with 23 apps. Call quality is excellent, VAD and BT are working great. GPS is not locking on as fast as previous hybrids I've used but it's locking strong when it does. The battery looked like it was going crazy but seemed to settled down after a third reset."

I like this site and all we (the mods and the experienced Crackberry community) do to help the BlackBerry community overall. My post count is low but please, don't think I don't visit this site at least 5 times a week. The animosity in this thread against people who take valuable time to improve the RIM OS leaks to help our devices run better, is not what I've perceived this community to be about. I ask that we all respect the time they invest, especially as we are all privy to their work for free. i apologize for any typos or sentence structure issues. Crackberry rules!

Lindros2, the OP (original poster) I don't think represented driphter at all, but rather a rather dramatic individual who was expressing his outrage/shock that driphter had a reported OS 6 build.

I for one hope that people come here to talk about their "half-baked" work, selling it or otherwise. I like that these people post here and talk about their hybrids, Crackberry luckily has a big enough community that most all of the hybriders from blackberryos, driphter, bbhybrids, etc will post here in addition to their own stomping grounds. That makes it easy for someone like me, and likely you, who appreciate and look forward to the work these people do and can read about it here, rather than having to go to 4 different sites to see who has the latest and greatest.

I really don't understand why people are so upset that driphter has only released this to their own VIP members, isn't that their prerogative? Everyone here is more than capable of getting the same files these guys did and making their own hybrid that they can release for free or hide in the basement with. You can scoff and say that they are charging for RIM's IP, not really, they aren't charging us for a RIM release of OS 6. This is someone that is making a hybrid of leaked OS files, taking their time and effort to do so. If they want to release this to the people that have donated money to their site first or only, I feel that is their given right. If anyone should have a problem, it would be RIM and as far as I know, there has never been a cease and desist letter and I've never seen a hybrid pulled from a download site (unlike straight leaks)

Feel like you were being scammed because they sold it as OS 6? That's why you do your research and read what is posted. If you bought a VIP for the purpose of getting one hybrid, then you kinda missed the point of why they offer it.
so in short, quit ********. Last I checked, outside of North Korea it's still OK to expect compensation for your time and effort for services rendered.

We are all here really for one reason, we want to get the most out of our devices, we are lucky enough to have people that know what they are doing and have the time to do it, and lastly are willing to share with us. All you do by pissing and moaning is hurting the community as a whole, if I was one of the slandered individuals in this thread, I would've washed my hands of CB, what a bunch of unnecessary stress and drama

I paid for VIP status for a few reasons:
    1) Help dcom pay for the site
    2) Show my support
    3) Get access to the hybrids a few weeks early
    4) Be able to test the hybrids early

I dunno, the early access is what got me. I don't feel like I am paying for the hybrid, since I can get it for free if I wait. I just get it early.

The VIP members who are uploading and sharing these early access hybrids are jerks. It is not theirs to share. I wish I could remove all the links and help out dcom.

As for the hybrid I am using for the Tour. I love willyboy v6. It is amazing. All my applications are nice and snappy. There is hardly any memory leak and my battery life is amazing. When I am at work and have full service all day with moderate use, I have less than 1% drain per hour.
