I am getting my 9700 replaced and I was wondering if I would have to let all my BBM contacts send a message regarding the new PIN or they will be notified automatically once I restore the contacts on my new handset ?
I just received my 9700 this week. I had BBM5 for my 8120. Received the 9700 on Wednesday, on Thursday when adding contacts (since this was the first time I had time to do so), it asked me if I wanted to do a mobile backup. I accepted and my contacts were copied from my 8120's pin to my new pin. Hope that helps.
Once you restore your contacts everything is set up the way you had it on your old device now regarding your pin its up to you whether you want to notify them of the change.

So am I right in assuming that once I restore my BBM contacts on my new phone, I do not have to inform them of my new PIN ? Will my new PIN will automatically be updated on their blackberries ?

As stated above, you do have to do a remote backup using one of the email accounts associated with your old device and then use that same account on the new one to restore your contacts.
You may also do a local backup on the micro sd card and restore it from there but I always refer the remote option.
