So the new BBM leaked, with the intriguing new feature that lets you add people by scanning a bar code, is this the future as we see it?

Is this the end of the pin?

Let me know what you think.

Nah I think its just a fun feature for bbm but pins will still be around. Many apps are tied to pins and not every blackberry has a camera for the bar code scanning.

I agree. I think that PINs will be around for a while at least...plus, are the barcodes generated from the PIN? (sorry if that's a stupid question )

Not to mention, if your not next to the person to scan their pin and your adding somebody via pin who may be a distance away or even across the world... PINs will stick around im sure!

The bar code contains the PIN. You can't remove the PIN any more than you can remove the IMEI. They are both inextricably linked to the device.

You can scan the bardcode from anywhere, even if you are in Chicago and they are in Iraq.

Barcoding is just a way to convert information into something a computer can quickly scan with an optical device like a laser (or 3.2 MP camera, as the case may be....)

The barcode is the BB's electronic "fingerprint" of its PIN.

In all reality, you can type in a user's pin faster than the process to scan the barcode.

The barcode is really just a Neato feature.

I def thing the pin feature is cool but there are still going to be a lot of people out there without the bar code so either way is cool to me

I better not start reading people complaining that weirdos are requesting them
on BBM. If that barcode is there, they'll use it to their advantage.

    +1

I'll stick to using my PIN. The barcode is a neat feature, but I'm not going to post it out there for everyone to see. And, even though you can scan it off of the computer screen, there is always the chance that someone has no way to send the barcode to you to scan.

Its a 007 feature that incorporates the camera
    an modern technology.

Wonders when someone will develope a fun app
that will allow you scan all sorts barcodes that will
    access info on products

As of now, it has enough cool factor to show off
    to friends.

Barcode readers have been around for sometime now, I've been waiting for it to catch on. Android devices have the ability to shop and compare prices while you are actually in the store.

Here is a cool barcode reader available to download to your Blackberry

    NeoReader: List of manufacturers

And here is a link to a QR code generator via Google

Its kinda crackin' me up that people are posting barcodes without any thought.

If you wouldn't post your PIN on a profile anywhere before BBM5, why would you post a barcode now, esp when there is a location notify feature on BBM5?

I hope the PIN doesn't die. I'd much rather say "PIN me" than "scan me"

Loll yeah! Pin won't die. If you are far away from the person you just give them your pin. Yes you can post your barcode from your computer but if the person didn't do that yet it would be a while for them to do it. Much faster to just give out your pin.

The pin won't die. It is to much an intricate component to blackberry. For RIM when you register on the network it is the pin you are registering. That is how the network knows who you are, what email services you get and where to route your messages.
