When I upgraded my 9700 to OS .423 I found that I had Mobile Backup. It was working fine. Today I went to sync and I was asked if I wanted to activate it and when I said YES it told me that I need to wipe the device. The only thing I did recently was unlocking the phone. T-Mobile sent the unlock code. Wiping the device wouldn't be the end of the world but I thought I would check here first.

I would not do that. Backing up your phone is easily done by using DM for free vs paying for a service that stores your info on carrier servers.

Mobile Backup is a free service with T-Mobile and it's nice having redundant backup.

Either way I would not wipe my device to take a backup UNLESS for some reason doing a backup via the DM prompted me to do so. Even then I would question why.
