How secure is BBM over BIS?
Are my messages stored on a server somewhere?
Can they be intercepted by someone who knows what they are doing?

Considering that berry's are very secure and BBM is more or less an instant message app specifically for BlackBerry's, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I'm pretty sure BBM messages are protected by RIMS infrastructure. What type of person are you trying to hide the messages from? FBI, cops, girlfriend/boyfriend? lol

No, I'm not trying to hide any info. I'm just curious how secure my BBM's are given BlackBerry's high security reputation.

I'm sure if i was under investigation for a serious crime, law agencies will be able to get any and all information including BBM, email, texts, phone calls with a phone call to RIM.

But, what about people that are very tech savy? How easy would it be for someone like that to eavesdrop on BBM's?

I'm guessing messages to a girlfriend, trying to hide 'em from the wife, or soon to be ex-wife .

There has been several news stories about BB's being used by crime organizations because of the security. BB's have yet to be hacked... by anyone. Then again if your not doing anything illegal then why worry about it? Seems a loaded question to me. But I am suspicious by nature. Posting such things on the interwebz, like this site, leaves more trails than your BB ever would

Only if you are on BES your BBM messages can be read. If it is your personal device, you are safe. If it is possible for a tech savy person to get your BBM messages, then they would probably need incredible equipment. But there have been no hacks recorded that have been successful getting into a BB.

Law enforcement (w/subpoena), intelligence agencies and certain hackers have abilities to access your information. If you are doing something illegal or against the interests of a nation, the first two might (I emphasize might) be a threat. The hacker is only a threat if you gain their attention through some means. Not likely for a person who is not "notable".

    haha...
I have nothing to hide, if i did i wouldn't come on to a public web forum and ask these questions.
No girlfriends, no illegal activities, just curiosity on how secure my berry is.
I read a post by civic saying that the web browser is not secure at all and to not conduct any banking over it cause people with some know how would be able to see what your doing, so i figured what about BBM? Email and SMS can be tracked but I wasn't sure about BBM.... that's all... no conspiracy or anything....

And i'm talking about BIS not BES. BES, your admin can see everything....

BBM is very secure, that's why so many LE agencies utilize blackberry. The Feds have super secure blackberry's, agents can not send pin/bbm messages to anyone that's not on the Bureau server.

Pick up your berry. What you now hold in your hand is the most secure device on the mobile market. If hiding your BBM convo's are secret delete them on your device, and they are gone forever from most prying eyes. If someone had the ability to hack RIM's servers, than you'd have alot more to worry about than BBM convo's.

I would also like to mention RIM's servers are in Canada. Therefore if your local law enforcement want to get the information from them, and you are not Canadian.

They would have a lot of work on their hands, RIM's infastructure is secure enough to keep only authorised devices connected to their servers.

Trust me they are not as secure as you think. All it takes is one viscious person to make a complaint that you are harrasing them and just with your mobile No they can get what you are messaging to any of your bbm contacts. I found this out when I was sending messages a group of my work colleagues kept gathering around the same PC. So i thought that is very strange so I started to slag one of them off in a message to a friend and sure enough he became embarressed. I then had a woman with bright red hair walk by my desk so commented how stupid it looked in another message and Bingo I was correct they could see everything I was writing.

Not sure why everyone has the perception BBM is secure anyway. It's no more secure then anything else on your phone.. put your phone in the hands of someone else w/o a password and voila.. any said security is gone.. just common sense.
