Im just still searching trying to find out what the best combo is for the tour, Ive been back and forth between this hybrid and that and this radio and that one and I still havent came up with one that i just extremely like. Has anyone when to the 5.0 and disliked so much and went back to 4.7? It seems like thats my next step is going to be if I dont find one I can deal with. Im a big person on battery life and it seems like it was alot better on 4.7. let me know your thoughts!

I had a problem with battery life on 7.12
Was going down to 3 bars within 5 hours...totally unacceptable.
Also had a REALLY unstable data/mobile/wireless connection...I'd lose connection to the tower every other minute...totally unacceptable.

So I rolled it back to 7.11 and upgraded my BBM to the .52 version and everything is just as fast as with 7.12 and there are no problems with my connection. Only real change I see is that my phone doesn't boot at 3 minutes anymore...it takes about 4-5.

But that's still better than the 10 minute boot time that 4.7 had, and I can live with 4-5 minutes!

5.0 is still way better than any 4.7 for that matter. I mean, if you can deal with small issues like media player and txt messaging, why not keep it over big issues on the 4.7. im running 5.0.0.230 right now and havent seen any big enough issues to go back to 4.7 or even go with a hybrid.

I tried several 5.0 versions. .191, .230, with and without hybrids on top of them. Didn't like any of them for several reasons, the biggest of which may not concern you. App compatibility for me was a big issue. Viigo, Vlingo and Enterprise Messenger don't work well in 5.0 yet. Also, the removal of the background banner on the homescreen stunk, as it limited the photos I could use for wallpaper. Photos with light backgrounds made the icons hard to read.

I've gone back to 4.7.1.53. Stable, fast and great radio signal. And great battery life.

Hybrids can only do so much. I want a new leak, we need a new radio file instead of the java. The hybrids can only improve so much, and the work that has been done is great, but there is a limit. Even just a new stable radio file would be great!

I'm using 7.11 and it's been very stable, although 4.7.1.61 was very stable for me too. The 5.0 OS seems to be snappier. Haven't really noticed much difference in terms of battery life. The one thing I really don't like though is the threaded SMS. I know there are those that really love it. But, I much prefer a non-threaded SMS, or at least implemented differently that in 5.0. Plus, it would be nice to have it work with today themes again.

I have a lot of apps installed on my Tour. I would constantly get the 552 error message while using 4.7.1.53. The 552 error has never appeared since jumping up to 7.11, so I can't see any reason to go back to a 4.7 version. I can live with the little quirks here and there as long as I have a working OS and no install errors - I'd be afraid to go back to 4.7 with the possibility of app install errors.

The first 5.0 I had.... crashed my phone.... the 2nd has been nothing less than perfect. All the apps work that I download the only one that I have found that won't is, Capture It, but there are other apps that are also free that do the same thing, so no biggie. Signal has been great, battery life has been pretty good, there is a glitch with the SMS thread but I use mostly BBM anyway... so for me the 5.0 works well.

I'm in NC too, and the V.12/.191 radio is ridiculous fast and stable. My Data speeds and browser are better than new, and I could be in an underground bunker and still call out. Yesterdays battery test; I went almost 32 hours without battery charge. Keep tweaking, that's half of the fun.

What is a "Hybrid" in the context of blackberry?

There is a base version - say 5.x.230 of the OS. It consists of a series of separate modules (the actual files are cod file) containing code for various BB operations. What people discover is that while the basic, say .230 OS is not all that bad, some of the modules do not perform as well as modules from a different version of the OS. So they add and subtract modules and create a mixture of OS versions - a hybrid. This supposes that these folks have tested and found one module wanting or defective and another module that performs the same function from a different version is better.

Some of it is magic and some of it very well documented.

Rim probably does the same thing when testing beta versions. They fix one module but keep the rest from a prior version. Or they blow it!

I've had battery life problems on both 7.11 and 7.12, even on .230. But, I'm staying with .230, because it works great..I really haven't found a hybrid that really works with my device.

I did. I have tried both 5.0.0.230 and three hybrids. All had more than just minor annoyances for me. The last time I tried straight 5.0.0.230 the phone would not ring when someone called.

So, I am back to .61 and discovered that it is not that bad after all- stable radio, very little lag, and most importantly it just works!

I haven't bothered with 7.12 since not sure what it would get me over 7.11. What do you think of 7.13 (and now 7.14)? Am running 7.11 with the .230 radio and all seems well for the last few weeks so don't necessarily feel the need to jump to the next one - YET

Just upgraded to 5.0 earlier today.

So far my only complaint is the removal of the background banner.

Why they would do that is beyond me.

I have yet to find a usable background that I like.

Some of them render my dock icons invisible and others make my status icons and clock invisible.
