Home Screen Alert for SMS,MMS,BBM, etc. (8530)

I just switched from a Treo 755 to a BB 8530 and it has been quite an experience. One of the things I loved about the treo was that when I received a text message or other type of message, the screen would automotically turn on and message would display itself on the home screen allowing me to view the message without having to open the messaging application. I think the iPhone works this way as well.

Is there any way for the BB to do this?

There are apps for that, for sure. One thing the BlackBerry can do that the Treo and iPhone can't, is assigning custom sounds to the alerts.
