Does anyone know how mnay characters iMessage lets you send at once? Is it like SMS for iPhones only 160 characters before it splits the message? BBM lets you do up to 2000

There is no limit to imessage text length.
That would be a fun thing to actually test,
it was once said about BBM that there was no limit, till people started hitting the limit in the 2000 character range,
iMessage is completely free. It doesn't charge anything on any plans. :|
If that was the case why would people with iPod touch's be able to use it? Lol.
It's completely free.
& iMessage doesn't have a 160 character limit.
His point, thought not well made was that iMessage when NOT on Wifi isn't free, it uses your dataplan, and the efficiency of HOW is used that dataplan is not really known.
to the "unlimited" dataplan user it is of very little consequence that it uses data in any way.
I see.
Yeah I have unlimited everything with Sprint, so no water what device I have
it doesn't really matter to me how much data is used. :D
56 Million..approximately EDIT: that's how many BBM subscribers there are currently.
I'm not going to say that BBM is the thing that solidifies a decision, but I think this method of thinking really shows how we North Americans view the world as a whole; we only see ourselves and what happens around us. Monthly plans for IM do exist in NA but aren't that popular, but this isn't true about the rest of the world.
All I'm trying to say is, there are many places around the world where lots of people do pay a monthly fee solely for BBM and we cannot judge the reality of the world based on what we see in North America.
*EDIT: of course I can't say for sure that people in other countries don't view the rest of the world in the same way, but it's a fact that the world all look at the US and the other way around isn't as prevalent.
Well bbm comes with the price of having a smart phone or any other data plan.
What I'm saying is if RIM is doing so well in the rest of the world and doesn't need the USA why are there mega sites reporting they are in deep do do, the stock holders angry, they have laid off a lot of workers, the stock price has tanked etc.
So why are they in this situation of the rest of the world thinks they are doing fine?
BBM is really nice, but it doesn't sell phones. You can make the case to everyone about how it's more secure and how much better it is, but most consumers don't care about that because it's a closed system. Also, many of us on Android or iOS came from BB, so it's not like we're ignorant of how good it is. It's just that BBM isn't enough of a draw to switch back. I loved BBM -- back in 2007 when all my friends had BBs it was fantastic to get a multi-party chat going. But by 2010 I was one of the only people left with a BB and so BBM became useless to me. The only way BBM could be a draw for me is if a significant number of my friends switched back to BB.
THAT is why BBM must remain Exclusive to BB,
IF BlackBerry gains popularity and a significant portion of a social circle moves to BlackBerry, that is a driving factor to get a BlackBerry to be included, FaceTime didn't really accomplish this for Apple,
BlackBerry needs to be successful in the main stream for BBM to be a factor in the purchase.
iMessaage doesn't even come close to comparing with BBM. IMessaage is a simple SMS over the data plan, with a larger size limit and delivery receipts. BBM is far more comprehensive than that.
Whatsapp on the other hand does compare well with BBM, and due to its cross platform nature, and BBs weakening position in the market, compares very favorably IMO.
I think RIM should release free BBM lclients for Windows/Mac. This will greatly expand the user base, allowing nearly everyone in the world to be part of BBM. This should dramatically increase the value of BBMs network effects. This wont hurt BB either, because if those users want to use BBM while mobile, they have to get a BB.
I think this will also be a fantastic intro to BBM for everyone, without requiring RIM to lose a competitive edge against its smartphone competitors.
BBM is one of the main draws of Blackberry so of course it must be exclusive. The only thing that could expand on that in BB10 is to link Video chat with BBM, which would be great.
Make BBM one of a kind.

I see bbm as a simple facebook between bb users. It is simple, easy to use and reliable compare to whatsapp for example.
imessage does not enter in this category because it is a sms over data system only.

While I agree that BBM is the best IM client out there because of its deep integration into the OS, the idea of giving them to non-BB users with the idea of luring them to a BB handset is a difficult task to successfully pull off for two main reasons:
Scenario 1: Give it free - First and most obviously, a full fledged client for free has no incentive for them to move over to BB. Second, if you give them a stripped down "lite" versions you're more likely to get user experiences of "this is sh!t" as opposed to "oh wow, I better jump to BB to get all the features". You create a problem of perception for yourself by compromising on the user experience.
Scenario 2: Charge non-BB users for BBM - While this is a bit more feasible, like many others have said, people generally won't be that keen on paying for an IM especially when you have cheap/free alternatives like Whatsapp. The comparative value that you get in having BBM free with your BB versus paid in another OS is equivalent to Docs to Go. There isn't a high level of "OMG I NEED TO SWITCH PHONES ASAP" but rather a "oh damn, that's too bad." Even worse, Doc to Go is better on OTHER platforms! Imagine if BBM was the same *starts to feel lightheaded at the thought*
If there were to be one way to go, I would say charging for BBM but providing a full and complete experience to the user no matter which platform. But BBM alone is not enough of a killer-app to convince users to jump ship. At the end of the day, it's about the entire system and how it all works together. Think of the OS as an entire car you're thinking about getting and BBM is the sound the door makes when it closes that helps with your decision! Haha
BBM, imessage, whatsapp, they all do the same thing for what most people use it for. Yes, I know, I know.. BBM is better for 100 reason you will give me, but at the end, its only as good as the community of people using it. Whats the point of updating your status when you are down to a handful of people? Much like when facebook came and made myspace obsolete, BBM is headed to the same direction. Its a shame, they should have allowed other devices to run BBM when their popularity was at its peak to retain the customer base and keep the Blackberry name out there. Had it been out there when I switched to iOS, I would have paid a couple of dollars for the app like I did for whatsapp.(not a monthly fee though) but I find it more and more to be irrelevant. And lets me just say that I disagree with those disrespectful comments like its only irrelevant in the U.S because Americans are sheeps or whatever, and the rest of the world can't live without BB. Most of those countries like in India, philipines, south america will switch to Android or iOS, which they are starting to at a rapid pace, as the price for those devices become more affordable. usually on the older iphones and androids. which is why you see many with BB5 devices and older. Its too bad, but until BB puts out a "better marketed" device, its just the way its going to be. and those who slack on the "kids" who are blinded by marketing, well.. they are leading the trend, they are leading the sales. So for letting them have a taste? I think it might be too late.
I think you hit on the nail, BBM is great for everyone who has a Blackberry but what good is it when no one else has a Blackberry? This is the fundamental reason why BBM alone can never save the platform. Everything else will, does it have all the apps people need, does it deliver with performance, does it still have everything the competitors have and much more. BB10 has got to be solid on its own, and BBM will keep this customers there once everything else is great...
Are we confusing two different things here? Are people actually paying for BBM or are they paying for a cheap data plan (BIS) that *includes* BBM?
If you look at the results of the last two quarters - leaving aside people with specialist needs and well-defined business needs like deRusett, the growth for BIS plans (and thus BBM) is for people at the low-end buying cheap data plans - I can't see that provides much of an advantage to people buying BB10 which is aimed at the premium markets (initially at least) and is likely to be sold on high tariff plans with plenty of data and texts thrown in.
The latter is true. But I don't think BIM would be going anywhere in the future. I would rather buy a BIM plan than succumb to the now increasingly ungodly prices for data.
How is BIS going to work with bb10? - people with LTE phones are pulling down a lot more data so even with compression - is it going to be a) that BIS plans get more expensive or b) less of the overall data is done via BIS - I'm thinking of things like netflix, spotify etc?
If the phones are LTE there will be an LTE. Data plan.

I can only speak from personal experience but my friends and fellow students using WhatsApp, for it is cross-platform and not proprietary like BBM that is what they told me when I asked especially the BB users. I know this is only seen from my point of view but isn't it indicative if not even BB users make use of this significant service?
As soon as I get my BB I naturally want to use this distinguishing service but I fear I'm the only one left by then:(
Those with BB's even if it is just a few you should encourage to use it with you, keep using Whatsapp, the vulnerabilities are miniscule, but learn about BBM, and show your fellow BlackBerry users what makes people keep using BBM, even when they hate everything else about their phone,
Glad to see people are still using BBM my contact list is dropping fast :(
