Desktop Software v7.1.0.41 (Bundle 42) has no problem connecting to BB 8830 and 9320 but identifies 9720 as "unknown device". The PIN is actually recognized but Backup and Restore buttons are grayed out:

Is there any solution to this?

    Windows OS: XP 32-bit
BB Desktop Software v7.1.0.41 (Bundle 42)
    Installer: 710_b042_multilanguage.exe
    Download link:

BB 9720 is the last BBOS device and was released in August of 2013, a few months after the release of Q10 and Z10. It seems that by then all DM updates had been discontinued and BB 9720 was left out unsupported. At this point it is just speculation but an image file of 9720 missing in Device folder and no mention of 9720 in DeviceCharacteristics.xml (in the same folder) seem to confirm this:

Do you have installed the last version of the OS? Maybe @thurask can help you...

The OS on the phone is Bundle 3008, which is higher than the official CB OS:

    7.1.0.1121 (Bundle 3008):

    https://i.postimg.cc/3Jrs1X03/DM-9720-h.png

I don't have an OS installed on PC, I would need to find that bundle somewhere first. The version available on CB is:

    7.1.0.1121 (Bundle 2994):

    https://forums.crackberry.com/blackberry-9720-f408/

If someone confirms that device OS Bundle 2994 works with Desktop Software v7.1.0.41 (Bundle 42) then I might just downgrade device OS to 7.1.0.1121 (Bundle 2994).

Then again, I don't have any BB OS at all installed on PC and BB 8830 and 9320 connect to DM without problems.

    Update:

I have recently got another Bold 9720 handset. It came with OS 7.1.0.1046 (Bundle 2839), which I later upgraded to OS 7.1.0.1121 (Bundle 2994), the official CB OS. It didn't resolve the problem. BB Desktop Software would still identify Bold 9720 as "unknown device", regardless of the OS installed.

Loader.exe is another story, there is at least some good news here. After the OS has been installed on the computer (and all vendor.xml files deleted) Loader.exe can recognize Bold 9720 without problem. JL_cmder can see it too. So it is possible to wipe an old OS and install a new one, or to install third party apps by pointing to ALX files directly from Loader.exe.

Data Backup v0.1.13 by S4BB Ltd. (free app still available in BB World) might be of some help here. I only had time to run a quick test. The app seems to backup (to SD card) contacts, memos, tasks and calendar events. However, email backup is said to be incomplete and there is no backup of any configuration settings, sounds, or password keeper. BlackBerry Protect offers Password Keeper backup but it is an online service which can be shut down any time, so it's not a reliable option.

It is quite unfortunate. Bold 9720 looks interesting because it is newer than Bold 9900 and has larger battery. But without the ability to perform the full backup on the hard drive or SD card it's rather useless.
