    on the storm :

open the keyboard in landscape mode .
press and hold the !?123 key untill it locks then release it .
    then type :

    ! , " "

those are the same keys as

    N M L L

you just dont have to hold the alt button on a storm it holds itself....
Very cool...just did this on my Storm. At work I brought my Storm with me to the bathroom (im in a big corporate office) and the signal dropped to -256. As I walked out of the bathroom to my office it slowly increased until I got to my desk and get a steady -90.

Only gripe on changing from bars to dBM on the Storm for me is that the numbers are too small. I'm keeping it this way though.

    Much thanks to the OP!

this works on the storm in both landscape and portrait, just hold down the 123 button until it locks and hit 889, thats for portrait mode, someone already has directions for landscape posted

alt LGLG will display a status log

in a txt message you can say myver to autotext it to myversion
mypin will do the same for pin

lt and ld are time/date functions.

    alt eace gives device info

    alt enter locks your device

As I drive, I now scan the horizon, looking for cell towers, wondering if maybe I will get better than -80 one day. Not likely.
Great tip Linda, thanks. How did you find this keypad sequence?

Oh, for those interested... Typical signal levels in deep space, such as those sent between the Voyager Probe and terrestrial control stations are MUCH weaker than anything mentioned above. In fact they are way below the thermal noise floor and cannot be received in the usual way. However, by making the SIGNALS sent / received REPETITIVE, and therefore NOT random, as NOISE is, signals can be detected 30 dB or more below the thermal noise floor which is at about -174 dBM/Hz. This is how DSN, the NASA "Deep Space Network" manages to work so far out in the cold of interstellar deep space.
Linda, may I steal this to use with my physics classes?

I tried it on an 8320 and it's just blank now. No numerical or bar indicator.

Is your background image black? The numbers are always black so you might not see them.

It doesn't show up on my homescreen- don't know if it because of the theme but it does show when I'm using a broswer. The lowest reading I'd gotten is -80 but reception is awful in my home with Sprint. I do get a few dropped calls daily
