I had BBM 5.0 before the software upgrade. It was removed during the update. Now I have no BBM.
So, BBM 5.0 works with the new software? Is it safe to just download it again?

Try this one from your phone and select yes when it overwrites: BBM 5.0.0.33 For OS 5.0.0 (1.2 KB)

First thing, go to Options, Applications, and change 3rd Part to Add-ons .... see if there is a BB messenger there alreay. If there is DELETE it and do a battery pull. Then go to http://blackberry.com/messenger and download it using your BB Browser. It will appear in your Instant Messaging Folder and it works fine. As soon as you launch it there will be a prompt to restore all your contacts from RIM.

you can download the new messenger from app world if you don't have 4.7 already installed I on purpose left it out in the install so i could do a fresh install of bbm 5 works just fine.
