Where can I download BB Maps, Google Maps and The Weather Network?
BB Maps are actually pre-installed with the OS but it seems that the icon is hidden until you connect to BIS. I suspect that I had that icon present on my phone after the shutdown because there were some left-over traces of BIS scattered all over the OS. Once the OS had been wiped and reinstalled BB Maps icon is gone for good. Those maps loaded much faster than Google Maps but they were a bit outdated (updated the last time around 2014).

    PS: check your PM.

    1) My Google Maps connection problems reported in post #25 have been resolved. I didn't have APN setup properly. What is surprising is that BB Browser, Opera Mini, CB Forums and The Weather Network had all been working properly with APN settings left blank:

    https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img924/5606/GOyveu.jpg

The proper entries for Bell Canada are as follows:

    https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/1161/fX3cge.jpg

The settings are different for each carrier and take effect immediately, without a reboot (or is it safer to reboot anyway?).

    2) I am not sure about the Host Routing Table. This is another configuration item which is now completely blank on my device (it wasn't empty before the shutdown). Should it be left as is or registered?

    3) For some reason the Terms and Conditions page in Google Maps v3.0.1.3036 constantly keeps auto-scrolling to the top, so it is impossible to scroll to the bottom of that page (to click on Accept button) with the track pad on a keyboard-only device like a Curve. It looks like this can only be done with a very fast swipe on the touch screen. This problem didn't exist when my Curve was connected to BIS.

I don't think I've ever rebooted for that purpose. Were the apps working over cellular data (not wifi) without an APN? That would be strange.

Registering on the Host Routing Table page, if I recall correctly, is how you used to be able to make a request for the service books to be sent to your device. So if you try to register now, I think that nothing will happen. My prepaid service never had BIS, so registration has never had any effect for me. Of course, in this brave new world, anything could happen...

I had to restart mine a few times, scroll immediately to the bottom, and hit the button. If I left it for a few seconds, it would actually add multiple repeating copies of the terms and conditions into the box. The topmost copies had no "accept" link and I couldn't get to the bottom one.

Yes, they were all working over the cellular data without APN (WiFi was turned off).

I completely forgot about checking APN because I have never needed to touch it in the past. I have been with Bell for a long time, first on CDMA, then on CDMA+BIS, and then on HSPA+BIS, so setting up APN had never been required.

    Re: Google Maps v3.0.1

    1) The solution to Terms & Conditions pop-up missing "Accept" button is as follows:

    a) scroll down to "Decline" button and hit Escape (to close the app).

    b) start GMaps again. Now "Accept" button should be shown and there is enough time to click on it even on a keyboard-only device.

    2) "Data connection lost, retrying".

If the message shown above pops-up in the right top corner of the map window the solution is as follows:

    a) just after GMaps is initially started hit "O" key a few times to zoom-out to a larger area (your country, state, province, etc.). This way lots of map data will be cached locally on the phone, making it accessible even w/o data connection.

    b) when "Data connection lost" message pops-up you might be able to simply ignore it and use the map like nothing happened.

    c) when you reach the edge of the map (with empty gray area shown beyond the edge) and the data connection still haven't come back:

Hit "O" key and then "i" key (to zoom out and then back in). This should trip the data connection to ON state again.

    3) GMaps cache should probably be cleared regularly. I just do it after each use:

menu - help - reset Google Maps - reset Google Maps

PS: All this should really be posted in a separate thread in BBOS Apps subforum. I will try to do it over the weekend, and include some screenshots and a few other tips.

    Update: 2022-Jan-15

Bell Canada network with default service books and APN setup manually.
    Carrier's data (WiFi not tested).
Brand new BB9320 wiped with JL_Cmder and the latest OS installed after that.

    Phone calls - ok
    SMS - ok
BB Email - out (requires BIS)
    BB Browser - ok
    Opera Mini -ok
    Logic Mail - ok
    Google Maps - ok
    BB Maps - n/a
    CB Forums - ok
    ilMeteo - ok
    The Weather Network - ok

I have added ilMeteo. It is a great Italian weather app and it works just fine w/o BIS. It requires APN to be setup properly, just like Google Maps v3.

With the default service books (I assume that means whatever was installed when the latest OS was installed) does the BB Browser work over cellular data? Or does it only work over wifi?

If it works over cellular data with the wifi turned off, then the Bell version of the OS must have the browser service books for the Bell Network included.

Cellular data only, for the last few days. I never use WiFi on my primary phone in real life, I might just use it occasionally for testing. BB Browser works ok over cellular data, with the usual problems accessing https web sites.

The OS is from O2 UK and not from Bell. It was the last OS available for BB 9320:

    9320AllLang_PBr7.1.0_rel2931_PL9.49.0.127_A7.1.0.1 098_O2_UK.exe

    https://forums.crackberry.com/showth...=1#post9426771

It is the fourth entry from top here:

    https://forums.crackberry.com/blackb...ve-series-f52/

Bell's OS file would have "Bell_Mobility_Inc" at the end of the file name (like this one, for BB9360):

Oh, okay. Did you restore those service books from one of your backups? If not, Bell is still pushing service books.

I didn't restore anything from the backup. The idea was to test a fresh OS, install some apps from SD card and make all configuration changes manually as needed. While it is inconvenient to have completely empty address book on your primary phone, it is a sacrifice that might pay off in the long run.

Bell pushed a few service books, maybe because I was still on BIS data plan (until Jan-15):

    Bell News
    Tunes & Apps
Self Serve VPL (account info app which stopped working years ago)

I will be doing another wipe in a day or two so we will see if those service books are still pushed or not.

I have figured out how to restore BB Maps icon. There was a single service book responsible for that on a BIS device and if you copy this service book to a device w/o BIS the BB Maps icon will be shown on that device:

    Test LBS RC Config

    https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img924/4918/qYB600.jpg

    https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/8559/VxcANn.jpg

    https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/5773/7vuDjx.jpg

And there might have been another service book required to make BB Maps fully functional:

    Test Search Services

    https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/4237/A9oqeV.jpg

    https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img922/8251/oZcGQE.jpg

Unfortunately, all this is purely academic exercise. As the map data servers are shutdown the app will start ok but the map area will remain blank:
