I have the Verizon Tour. A week ago the BlackBerry Messenger icon disappeared but was still receiving messages. A little while after that it stopped working so I restarted my device and when it still didn't show up I deleted the entire application but now I can't download it from the BlackBerry website on my browser.

This is the first time I've heard bbm icon disappearing by itself but while you're at it you might as well try upgrading to bbm 5 to see if it works.

Try the BiS site and resend your service books. Don't know if that will help, but it's a quick and easy solution that could do the trick.
