bbm and browser through wifi?

Can I use data such as bbm and browser through wifi only? Like if I'm on a plane with wifi for example, could I still use bbm?

How about sms/mms??

so does bbm just detect wi-fi automatically and use that or does it use your phone data?

I believe it uses the stronger of the two.. When at home, and i use BBM or Internet, I see my Router blinking when I send and receive..
