You could assign this reader to a convenience key. There's another one called neoreader too. Google it if you'd like, but I've only used i-nigma.

I use NeoReader because it supports the greatest number of barcodes. The QR code that BB Messenger reads is the most universal code so far, but it isnt the only one. Seems like some every other week or so there is another company that introduces its own type of 2D Barcode. Because of this you can come accross multiple types of codes and thus a universal barcode reader is needed.

This technology is great for advertising, tracking, storing DATA, business cards, hardlink URL's... etc.. so many things. QR Code, Hope this helps to answer some questions you may have.

Interesting thanks for the info. Can we just open our camera and point it to the barcode or do we have to go to bbm and add contact, then select scan, then scan? all that seems to much to just go to a webpage when you can easily just type it in. If you can just open the camera and point it then that's a different story.

I was testing with pictures & you can send full sized backgrounds/pictures embedded in the codes too. Then you can save the image to your berry after you scan the code & use whenever.

At least I am keeping myself entertained.

seriously what's the point of this barcode? if i wanted to go to www.crackberry.com i easily type that in faster than it would take me to go to bbm open up add a contact then go to scan then point at the barcode. So what really is the point of this?

my point of sale software has a bb app. Inventory would be a snap and i wouldn't need a separate scanner. scan and type quantity done...

Correct, BB Messenger is the only reader so far that will add a contact to your BB Messenger list. NeoReader is a stand alone app, while it can read BB Mesenger QR codes, it cannot add them.

There are various stand alone apps that are available; NeoReader, BeeTagg. But a native RIM QR-Barcode reader would be nice.

All the aftermarket QR Code readers are flawed. None seem to function properly all the time, at least in my experience with both a Curve and Bold. I'm excited to try this new reader built into BBM 5, but I'm waiting until BBM 5 is ready for prime time.

Nokia has embraced these QR Codes for years but never really pushed them. As stated before, they're HUGE in Japan but not really anywhere else. It seems like it could have tremendous marketing potential. Coupons, directions to exclusive events, and even business uses.

You can basically create shortcuts for anything you want. You could make one to promote your website/wallpapers/themes, basically anything you wanted. I'm for sure gonna push my favorite stuff now.

There are currently no viruses for BlackBerry. Even if one showed up suddenly, and was somehow embedded in a QR Code, you would have to click "install" to get it onto your BlackBerry. It cannot install automatically, without your explicit approval.
