B@stard Hybrid: Xarles

The new build: Xarles.

This release is the product of some more extensive testing, and trial and error using various base OSes. I tinkered with files from 7.1.0.247, 7.1.0.258, and 7.1.0.267, and I revisited some of my legacy files, too. I ran several test builds over various base OSes, including 6.0.0.723 (multi and all language) and 6.0.0.722 (which only has an Asia version).

Xarles uses the same basic architecture as Pierre. I am recommending the multi-language 6.0.0.723 base for 9700. I have been very happy with the performance of the 723 files.

My hybrids go through testing on the Bold 9700 platform. I have received reports that my builds work well on 9300, 9780 and 9800 devices, too.

Recommended base OS versions:

9300: 6.0.0.668
9700: 6.0.0.723
9780: 6.0.0.723
9800: 6.0.0.668

I will note that I have seen several users noticing a "break-in" period. That is, the first day or so has poor battery life, but then things stabilize and we start sipping at the battery again. Battery life is critically important to me, so I am always mindful of those issues (and reluctant to leave my beloved 9700 for some shiny new OS7 device). Personally I have not experienced this phenomenon, but I did want to mention that it is possible.

I have not personally tested this hybrid on any other devices, or on any other OS versions as a base install; however it should work on other devices without issue.

I will not be providing any support for this hybrid. I have not encountered any bugs with this build, but I have not run it through extensive testing either.

To install this hybrid, extract the contents of this zip file into the Java folder of the base OS you choose to use. On my system, these files were extracted into C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\9700M_v6.0.0.723_P6.6.0.248\Java.

When you extract the cod files into the folder listed above, you should be prompted to confirm that you want to replace existing files. If you are not prompted, then you are probably trying to extract to the wrong directory and the hybrid files will not be installed on your device.

If you do not know exactly what you're doing, then you should choose one of the following options:

1. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THIS HYBRID.
2. Read my guide on the CrackBerry forums, available here: Hybrid OS Installation Guide
3. Read any How To posts by elite1 in practically any hybrid or leaked OS thread on CrackBerry.com
4. Search the CrackBerry forums and read as much as you can find about how the BlackBerry OS loader process works.

Again, I will not provide any support for the installation or operation of this hybrid. It is intended for experienced users.

This package does NOT include any third party applications at all. I build hybrid OSes. I do not promote any apps or force users to choose whether they want to install apps they may or may not want. If you are looking for a particular third party app, I probably have an opinion about it and may be able to tell you where to find it (I'm talking free or paid versions, NOT WAREZ).

I tried a few things with the installation of this build to bring my memory management back in line with sanity. I took a full backup using Desktop Manager, then wiped with BBH Tool. I normally do not take this extra step, but I wanted to clear out a lot of databases and start fresh.

Immediately after OS install, and before installing any 3rd party apps (except MeterBerry and QuickLaunch) I had 129.6 MB free. I have actually had more memory free in these situations (over 134, actually), but I included BB Messenger in my OS installation. Typically I do not do that and install everything from jads on my sd card.

After installing all of my third party apps, I had exactly 111 MB free. I then did a selective restore of just my critical data and was left with 108.7 MB free.

I have dipped below 100 MB free a few times since the OS was installed, but I am generally staying in the low 100s for free memory.

I'll post some screenshots later to verify these figures.

Yup, that's correct. I used 7.1.0.247 for the bulk of the hybrid files. Performance was a lot more stable.

Just a side note: When 7.1.0.267 was being tested out for a hybrid build, we saw a bunch of glitches that made us not want to use it. "PERFECTION here is the KEY"

Well it's only been 12 hours, but so far this is the best B@stard yet. Why? After 5 hours uptime, and opening every single application I could at the same time (29 at the most), I was only down 1.3 MB of memory .

Wu... You may have finally cracked the OS 6 memory leak!

Anyways phone is running superbly, no issues with apps / phone / installations / "snappyness" / etc. Awesome work!

Random rambling from me....but after Verdell, I built Wiatt, Xarles, Yves and Zoe. Tested each on a variety of potential base OSes. I lived with Zoe over 723 for about 2 weeks...which was 13 days and 23 hours too long. Maybe I had a bad install, maybe I needed to clear my databases before I loaded....I don't know.

But Xarles is treating me right. I've tried a bunch of base OSes and 723 multilanguage is the one for me. Tried 706 and 722 (both of which only have AllLang/Asia versions with a larger sfi file). 723 multi rocks for radio performance. In the past, I would set to 3G and drop to gprs during calls. 723/Xarles holds 3G for the duration of the call. YMMV, but I'm on T-Mobile in the US and it is solid.

I do still leak memory, but it has only peaked at around 15 MB...still leaving me with almost 90 free. I run very few third party apps, and zero social apps (except BBM).

I'm sure I have a few other thoughts kicking around, but I'm tired and wanted to post a few observations here.

I'm on Rogers and have the phone set to 3G only, and since I have loaded a fresh install of Xarles I am dropping calls like mad where as I did not have any issues with BL6 running 706 SFI.

I am also noticing that the device will now power off at around 20% battery, whereas on BL6 I was able to run it to about 5% before power down which was really nice.
