I just read on BlackBerryos.com that the new 7 device codenamed Samoa will come with OS 7.2.
It clearly shows that BlackBerry is still spending considerable time on the development of these devices and the OS and are not going all in with BB10.
This sure seems like regressive, but one has to wonder whether people out there still want the Legacy OS so bad that it still requires development of the OS.

I feel this may indicate that BlackBerry aren't yet entirely sure about BB10 and are trying to sail in both boats without a clear direction.

I wonder what everyone's opinion is on this.

PS: All opinions on this thread are based on speculation. There is no official confirmation on the OS yet.

    Do the math.
Latest quarter - 60% of BBs sold were NOT BB10 devices.

Guess people still like BB7 in spite of the best efforts here to make fun of anyone who "misses" a feature left out of the hastily released BB10.

But isn't BB10 the way forward. And the math says OS 7 device shipments are declining rapidly. So is investing in developing an OS that nears it's end further by updating it to 7.2 an efficient deployment of resources and efforts.

The legacy device fans would accept the devices in 7.1. An update to 7.2 will only increase troubles for BB10 by more people complaining how BBOS is better.

As much as I think this may be a bad business decision for BBRY, I would rather upgrade to an improved 9900 with a better camera, battery, and signal strength than a Q10. But I would feel this way whether it came with 7.1 or 7.2, so I see ukmight's point. I am curious what 7.2 will bring though.

This is exactly what scares me. I know you have your preferences, but BB10 is the way forward and BlackBerry will not be spending a lot of time developing OS 7 for a longer time.

Given the seriousness of the situation, it should put all its resources into developing an exceptional experience on BB10 so that even the OS 7 lovers would love it. We all know that BB10 is still far from perfect and will require a lot more resources to maintain pace with competition.

Just my view. I hope BlackBerry knows what they are doing.

Nailed it. I dont understand if investing in 7.2 is going to bring them any new customers. It might only make them lose any more prospective BB10 customers as there is already some competition between OS 7 and BB10 and we all know OS 7 has way lower margins than BB10

I am just anxious to see what this device will look like and the specs. I still really enjoy OS 7, so even though I have a Q10, I will try to get my hands on one and see what it's like if it seems like a good one and not some Curve like device. I'm hearing rumors that it's supposed to be another Bold?

True. I wonder if the purpose of this release is to try to stop OS7 sales (and the BIS service revenue and subscriber base) from declining too quickly before BB10 really takes off. I think they said that was part of their problem, that the OS7 sales were shrinking faster than they thought.

Also, there may be a lot of people who are going to buy an OS7 device over BB10 no matter what. Better they buy a more expensive new BB7 with higher margins than the current BB7 devices, even if the margins are still lower than BB10 devices. Maybe that was part of their thinking.

No matter what their reasoning, I hope they've done their research on this. I'd hate to see them make a bad decision at this point.

Considering that they need to maintain the new brand quality while introducing/maintaining BBOS devices in the middle of upgrade cycles, I say its worth the effort. Most of the feature list must have already been scheduled anyways. The problem I can see in this is not releasing the update for all OS 7.1 devices, like the 9370 and 9310, and leaving it at that.

I dunno, IMO i really think that Blackberry OS 6 and 7 are the best... I always loved classy blackberrys and like other people
said, if i upgrade m phone is because i have to and it would be definetly an OS 7... I have never tried OS 10 but there is something about these oldies that i cant drop. they are what i call "blackberry phones" not "typical touchscreen smartphones".
Call me old fashioned but having a physical keyboard was the first spec i looked for on a blackberry...

There is another side to this possibility. Those of us that are Sprint based CANNOT get BB10's like the Z10. So any OS upgrades until Sprint offers a FULL SCREEN BB10 would be great.

I have a blackberry 9930. I had a choice to get this or the iPhone. I am happy I got my 9930 because I am able to handle my business more efficiently and faster with my Blackberry. I have Sprint and the 9930 can still be ordered at Best Buy or at Sprint. The 9930 is 0 dollars for a two year subscription at Best Buy. You have to push for it, since it is not on display. It comes with the 7.1 OS. It is a great phone and browser. The keys are comfortable. Not bad for 0 dollars. You can image I would be interested in any software update, like up from 7.1 to 7.2. Better = better and by Blackberry doing this, they have my attention and support as a valued customer.

Here is an older video post of the 9930 and features. It is now 0 dollars at Best Buy for a 2 year contract. This is like the Q10 except it has the track pad still, which is great. It is fast enough for me. I may upgrade to the Q10 still, once it comes to Sprint. The Q10 is a lot like the 9930, but more advanced, with the ability to use Android apps, better camera with auto focus and a slightly larger screen. Here is the 9930 video though: http://m.youtube.com/index?&desktop_uri=%2F

I have Sprint and a 9930....with the ridiculous and pathetic delay of the Q10 its really lost its "newness" factor......I would love to see a 7.1 update from Sprint much less a 7.2 lol......I love my 9930 but in a couple weeks when the price comes down I'll get the Q10......I am a hybrid and leaked os junkie so im gonna have my fun lol

Why not O.S 7.2 update comes up with facility like you can use normal data plans apart from Blackberry plans.

Moreover once this type of update arrives, RIM wins the race of smartphones and can fight back and overcome the lost part of the business all-over these years

Upgrading to BlackBerry 10 will bring you to the modern age of smartphone technology as well as give you a world class user experience. BB10 does not require or use a BIS plan. This new platform is leaps and bounds better than other competing platforms. Q10, Q5, Z10 are all fantastic devices.

does anyone think the blackberry curve 9380 will also be able to upgrade, due to it being a touch screen phone, so surely it is more easier to upgrade than having a keyboard?
