    On my plan, yes. I don't know if it's different for other carriers. I have TMobile.

    I use data for those services. Check your carrier for info.
    Or do a search using your carrier.

    If you use the Verizon Mobile IM, yes you are using SMS, it also states clearly " SMS charges apply for every message sent and received.
    Should you use Yahoo/Windows live messenger independent of Verizon Mobile IM, then you'll be using Data.
