Widget engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Looked at that whole thing and still don't understand it :o
It means that BlackBerry phones will continuously execute high level instructions, which you cannot see. This can be wasteful and will require more powerful hardware.
However, it also means that developers can use those instructions in their applications. The result is smaller applications for your phone, and those applications will have a shorter production cycle. Because all widgets use the same continuously executing instructions, there can be many more small cheap applications running on your phone.
Google and Yahoo have free widget engines for MS Windows. I think Windows 7 has a built-in widget engine. The Opera web browser has widgets. MacOS has always had a widget engine built-in, for example, in classic MacOS the calculator was a widget. You can try these to get an idea of the effects that widgets may have on your BlackBerry.
What if u dont want blackberryt o get widgets!? what if u think they're perfect the way it is!? I personally think that of my blackberry (8900) so what if i dont have 3G? i dont browse the web much, plus it has excellent battery life
Don't upgrade to the OS that supports widgets. If and when it comes.
To give a lay-mans term to Widgets it makes doing little stuff alot easier.
I just picked up a Moto Cliq (android 1.5OS)
I can put a Google Voice widget on my home screen that will allow me to "tap" on my icon and cycle through [ use Google Voice all calls > use Google Voice no calls > Ask before dialing > Use google voice for international calls only ] so that way i dont have to open google voice > menu button > settings > and then select what i want i can just tap on that widget and it works.
or my wi-fi widget. I can turn on or off wi-fi with the touch of the widget button instead of [ settings > wireless options > wi-fi > on/off ] i can just tap on the icon tap : on / tap : off.
or my face book widget
it shows the "face book widget" home screen and i can scroll through the various "up dates" without actually opening the program.
it just makes little things like that easier
Widgets are user based and user selected, they are not installed by default, they are only installed as per the user.
Yea you don't have to use the widgets if you don't want to.

So widgets are basically SBsettings on a jailbroken iPhone right?
not sure about that one - i've never played with a "JailBroken" Jesus Phone.
When are they going to be available? I'd guess that the default theme would need to get upgraded to accommodate widgets. I already have OS 5.0 on my storm.
