Depending on the phone, you can get Opera Mini.

MeterBerry cost money but an alternative would be Tinymeter.

Tether is amazing, so get that.

Chat for Facebook by mSonar was okay while I used it but now I use a Beta version of Facebook 2.0.

I need an app to backup messages/emails/contacts/calendar/etc.

I have FB 2.0 beta installed, but the chat doesn't seem to work (I understand this is a common bug).
