I have a tour on verizon and they want to charge 30 dollars a month for me to be able to teather to a laptop. Are there any apps that will work on the tour and let me teather without paying the monthly fee?

Try "thetherberry", this may be a solution for you.I have never used it, but have read about it. Sounds like it will work. If not go into Crackberry App Store and take a look, I'm sure you will find an app to solve your problem..

Tether Your BlackBerry | BlackBerry Modem | TetherBerry

$40 one time price. Simple to use and works well. Thats all there is to say.

By all mean use tetherberry but you still need to pay the tethering charges from verizon.. read your terms of service or face potential huge charges (and there are plenty of posts on that topic)

By analogy, the fact that you can run down the highway at 75mph and not get a ticket does not make it legal..

Where are you getting $40 from? I see it from $50. There's no way they can prove that you're using data for thethering can they? I'm thinking of doing this and I was wondering if I can get away with reasonable use (simply web browsing but no downloading)

Do they often catch people or is it more of an empty threat.

My bad, I bought it when it first came out, I think they were giving beta testers a special price or something.

I use tetherberry semi-frequently for lite browsing and some of my colleagues use it even more then I do and I haven't hear of anyone having any issues.

The only real thing to contend with is the 5gb monthly limit on data, if you go past it they can knock you down off EVDO and your blackberry will be using slow *** data. If you're just doing casual browsing then its pretty hard to hit that limit though so just don't download and you'll be fine.

Do you know of anyway that I can check how much usage I have used?

I do web design and photography as side jobs so I could see going through 5 GB in a month.

If your uploading and downloading a lot of high quality photos you could hit that pretty easily. I know with Sprint you can check your usage online but I don't know if Verizon has that ability or not.

It's very hard to reach the 5gb limit just browsing the internet. There does appear to be a 5gb limit. Even though your supposedly using your unlimited BB data.

The horror story I see being passed around the forums appears to be someone that did file downloading. Exceeded the 5gb limit and was charged per kb after. When he complained and denied he incriminated himself about using Tetherberry.

I loaded it today. Launched just fine with the default settings. I'm happy.

He's not just browsing the net. He is working with high resolution photos they can get very large in size. Considering that is the bases of his use he could clear that cap pretty easily. I completely agree that if all your doing is surfing forums and checking the news you aren't going to have any issues.

Am a new BB user and downloaded Tetherberry. It works great! I don't use it very much but when I use it, I need it!! I wouldn't use it as your exclusive internet access but I love it as support when I need to get on!!

There is a thread somewhere that tell you how to change some setting on your blackberry in order to tether which makes it free. The phone company just sees it as using the phone to surf the internet. Just don't go over the 5GB.

Exactly. I deal with individual pictures that are 15 to 20mb EACH and photoshop files that are much larger. I would want to be able to up/download these to my server at home. Plus with webdesign I am constantly up/downloading all sorts of things. I would not be shocked if I found out that I used close to 100gb per month between all of my computers.

I wonder though that if I did get caught could I play it off as if I really did use all of that on the bb? Maybe tell them that I streamed movies and youtube constantly. Or that I watch a lot of porn. I doubt they would question anyone if they admitted that.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but how can you tell how much data you've used with Tetherberry? There's a little status information window that displays 'Packets Sent','Packets Received','Data Sent', 'Data Received',etc..would this be it? And if so, which would it be?
