Gray Matter Apps would like to announce the release of SpeedNotes v1.2.0 on BlackBerry App World.

    What is SpeedNotes?

SpeedNotes is a fast and convenient application for taking and sharing notes without the need to open and name a new memopad entry or concern yourself with ensuring that the note is saved before exiting the application. When typing in your note, SpeedNotes automatically takes care of saving your work to your BlackBerry's internal storage. At any point you can just press escape to exit SpeedNotes and then return later and your note will automatically be loaded, ready for you to either continue working with, send or save it to a selection of destinations or simply clear and start again from scratch.

SpeedNotes supports sending or saving your note to the following choices:

    - A MemoPad entry.
    - A file on either your SDCard or BlackBerry store.
    - A Calendar entry.
    - A Tasks / ToDo entry.
    - An Email.
    - An SMS message.
    - A PIN message.
    - The BlackBerry clipboard.

The calendar, task/todo and email options support a choice of fields for placing the note into, for example, within calendar you can choose to place the note within either the Summary, Location or Note fields.

Existing notes can also be loaded into SpeedNotes from the following choices:

    - A MemoPad entry.
    - A file from either your SDCard or BlackBerry built in storage.

    What's new in SpeedNotes v1.2.0?

SpeedNotes v1.2.0 adds the following new features:

    - Autosaving Notes

SpeedNotes now has the ability for automatically saving your notes to either the SDCard or MemoPad with an automatically generated name whenever the application is exited. The automatic name can either be the first 20 characters of the note or a date and time stamp. In addition, SpeedNotes can also be configured to clear the note immediately after saving it, allowing for fast, continuous note taking.

    - Homescreen Shortcut Key

SpeedNotes can now be launched from the homescreen by pressing the 'P' key on your BlackBerry.

    - Note Searching

From the note editing screen, you can now search your notes for word matches.

    Where can I obtain SpeedNotes?

SpeedNotes is available from BlackBerry App World for a special v1.2.0 launch price of $0.99, there is also a fully functional 7-day trial version available:

It is far better than interesting - this is the handiest way to grab quick random thoughts with no hassle, no save prompts, etc.

I've been using this since the very first beta and I love it for snagging snippets of text throughout the day.

SpeedNotes has become the place I start all types of things. Memopad entries, emails, tasks, calendar appts. You name it, SpeedNotes can do it. The new version is even better than before. And Russ' customer service is second to none!

Just downloaded and have been using the trial today. And I have to say it's a really neat and (best of all) usefull app. I'll be buying the full ver later today without hesitation.
What I thought was extra good was it's easier than selecting text/copy & pasting to put the same note in (say) calendar and memopad emtry. Well done.

When I press the 'P' key on the keyboard it brings up my call list not Speednotes. Is there something I need to change?

For the homescreen shortcut key to work, you will need to ensure that universal search is disabled on OS6 and higher devices.

Yes Universal search is disabled. Still get my call list when I use the 'P' key

Update: I'm currently researching the issue with the home screen shortcut, I will post as soon as I have more information.

Russ, for some reason my install of SpeedNotes is launching with E and not P. (I only noticed because the E is underlined as the hotkey on the homescreen icon text).

Oh, and I recall BBNotePad being able to grab the P hotkey assignment.

E opens up SpeedNotes for me too. P opens the phone part for my device.

Add me to the 'E' List.

Actually, I like the 'E' key for launching as I already have the 'P' key assigned.

As always, thanks for this wonderful app!!

Heh, I'm the exact opposite - I have E mapped to TinyMeter and P is open. Of course, the hotkeys I have mapped are done via theme and only work on the home screen, not the app list (true of all theme-mapped hotkeys). So if I'm on my app list screen and hit E it launches SpeedNotes, but from home screen E launches TinyMeter.

So, I guess my 'vote' is for the originally planned P mapping - so I can launch from home screen too.

And so begins the possible list of requests that led me to create about 50+ variations of my leebo theme. Sorry Russ.

Well, color me embarrassed, but I just checked my code and I did indeed set 'E' as the launch key for SpeedNotes! I swear, as I get older, I'm more and more sure that there is some other guy called Russ Nash that follows me around and does stuff, all the time pretending he is me!

So, what to do... what to do... leave it at E or switch back to P? I will probably leave it at E (my double must have switched it there for a reason!) as P seems to be the default key for the call log.

Thank you everyone for your input and help as always! You are an awesome bunch

    Russ.

I'd leave it as E and not overwrite the default P launch key. I use all default key launches.

I'm going to sound like I'm whinging, but I would really prefer the P key be mapped to SpeedNotes. In case no one has noticed, the big green key on the other side of the keyboard does the same thing as having P mapped to Phone. Perhaps I could make a case for a super-secret private version 1.2.1 that maps P?

    [/kinda facetious tone]

I have no knowledge about developing apps, but my guess is that you can't overwrite a default mapping key.

    You sure can.

As I mentioned earlier, BBNotePad grabs the P key. And anyone who has ever tried out the Bloomberg app (as I did) learned quickly that it grabs the B key. Major problem for me since I rely on B for Browser.

Most developers look for an unused key just to avoid a slew of end-user complaints based on reassigning a familiar key...but really the Send Call key makes the P mapping redundant.

Meh, I'm just revising my theme hotkey assignments now instead. Needed to make a couple of other changes anyway.

Should only take me a day or so to get used to a new mapping.
