I have my phone set to forward all unanswered calls to my google voice number, which then sends me an sms of the message transcript. Being able to log into google voice on the web and see a record of incoming/outgoing texts is also quite nice.

I tried to download the Google Voice app today. It never comes up and after a battery pull my bb just froze. I have a Bold. Anyone else have this problem?.

I have a Bold as well. Initially when I installed it, I could not connect to google voice to update contacts/messages. I installed it at the same time as a coworker, and his worked fine right away. Worked fine, that is, until he made an outgoing GV call just to test the dialer application and was connected to another guy making an outgoing GV call from the NRA. I think there may have been a few wires crossed when the application dropped this morning. Heh

I'm thinking the same question. I was excited to get my invite, but as I read into the service and thought about what number to pick I asked myself, "why do I want/need this?"

Like most CB'ers, I'm all about the latest and greatest gadgets, but what's the point of having this? My cell number hasn't changed in 10 years and I can always move my house number wherever I want. I have VOIP that emails me to my pc and my bb when I get a voicemail.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a tool, but why would I want this? Thanks for any input.

Also, how does it work with cell minutes (ie Verizon to Verizon)?

Free visual voicemail with vm transcription makes it worth it IMHO.

I think there are some real nice advantages to Google Voice.

    1) You give out one number, it rings your home, cell, and/or work number. It doesn't matter where you are, you'll get the call. You can even tell the system which numbers to ring based on who's calling. You can even route unwanted calls to not ring you.

    2) The Dialer changes the caller ID to match your GV phone number. When people see the number you are calling from , it is your Google Voice number, instead of your cell number.

    3) Visual Voicemail w/ transcription. I think it is nice to not only have someplace to view and listen to voicemail messages (even through the web), you can read a transcription of the call on the web, or through the GVD app.

Did a check on this last night and this morning. I called my GV number from my wife's ATT cell phone both times. Each time, I answered with my ATT cell phone. Last night, 11:15 PM, both phones used Night and Weekend Minutes. No surprise there. The interesting thing was this morning, 8:15 AM. My phone used mobile to mobile minutes. Her phone used anytime minutes.

I read about this in another thread and no one had a clear answer. So, in conclusion, the GV user that has the GV number forwarded to their ATT cell phone will use mobile to mobile minutes when the original caller is an ATT cell phone user. The original caller will use their anytime minutes. Sucks for the original caller, but is awesome for the GV user.

The one central number this is OLD ! YAC has been about for years.
As for the visual voicemail, sounds interesting, but seems flawed, and not sure I like the idea of a system keeping a log of the transcripts of my messages lol

Nice article in the New York Times that explains a lot about Google Voice. Verizon to Verizon calls placed thru Google Mail cost you minutes on both phones since it's not a direct VZW to VZW call.

I was not able to post the link to the article because I don't have enough posts. That's pretty effing lame...

As do I! My wife and I both received Google Voice invites and I added the number to our Friends and Family, so now we can use that number and not rack up our minutes. The only catch is that you have to dial out using the Google Voice Application, otherwise you would have to add that number (In this case my wifes) to the Friends and Family list.

So do you add your gv #to the friends & family or the # that shows up in the call log?

The big plus for single people, especially single with crazy ex's that like to call at odd hours. Now if forced into changing your phone number, you only give out the GV number, this keeps well meaning friends from giving the ex, your real number(s).

Added plus is no matter why you change you phone number, you can always be reached via the GV number (as long as you add the new/temp numbers into the GV call list.
