If I'm abroad it's $0.50 to send and receive an SMS

I wish there was some application for a BlackBerry that is somewhat like a chat or like Skype that would let me send and receive SMS cheaper...

Ohhh I know something that GTalk did that to an extend?

I'm using an app named VoipbusterSMS for sending SMS. You need an account and credits from voipbuster.com
It works great, costs are about 5 ct/SMS.

However, SMS arent sent in Unicode, so in some Languages some characters aren't shown correctly...

You can get the app in the Crackberry App-Store.

right, I found out that doing SMS is even for free with Google voice

but the problem is the return message - it's sent to my regular phone and thus receive cost is $0.50 for me with my Verizon international plan in other countries...

Try forwarding to email via Google Voice.
