Tried to test 9650 version on Australian Bold 9700 (Three network). Application installs correctly and boots, but moments after booting i get a notification : Skype mobile can only be used on Verizon Wireless phones.
Let's hope someone can modify the code to remove this check.
This is going to be fun.
no need to download it OTA... just register your phone or battery pull and the download app will be on your homescreen of your phone since its pushed by Verizon
well its becuase Skype is only for Verizon users
This is whack...I really hoped it was gonna work on my unlocked Storm. There is gotta be a way around this.
The only way around it is to get a vzw account.
Its an exclusive deal skype and verizon have. Other carriers do not support it.
exactly. not only do you need a verizon phone, you need the verizon service. doesnt matter if you have a verizon phone, still wont work without verizons service
what about veizon phone running sprints OS5?
they actually have an OTA download listed as 9650 which is the upcoming CDMA Bold (Tour 2). So, if you have Verizon service you should be ok. I would have thought an unlocked Storm would have worked becuase it still has the Verizon firmware on it and reports the VID=105. However, they must actually being doing mobile number authentication so this is much harder to get around--the easiest way as someone mentioned would be to modify the application code as to remove the authentication check upon loading.
Is it the application that is checking or doesn't it checking with the skype servers to see where it is coming from?
doubt we will be able to hack the cods. seems like its server side checking
can you make calls VOIP now on 3G?
I doubt the cods will be hacked, but the initial check doesn't seem to be server side. On a non-verizon phone try disabling all external connections, then open it and it will still pop up and say that you can't use it.
Editing the program will not do any good, it's a service VZW is providing on their network, the app just makes it work. If you read the press release it says the voice calls are carried over the circuit switched system, which means VZW is operating a "gateway" somewhere in one of it's NOC's that takes the normal voice call and bridges it over to the internet to link with Skype's system. Unless another carrier was offering the same service (and why would they) the program does no good on one of their phones.
Always good info from BBtweeps! :D
Well there is some hope. Skype on Verizon BB is not supposed to work while roaming on to other networks. However, I downloaded and used the Skype client while in the US and then roamed to London. It continued to work for calls everywhere except UK and US. I also received Skype call on my mobile
But then for some reason it went through cold restart and then it started showing the message that Skype can only be used on verizon network.
Hopefully further experimentation will show the way forward. BTW if there was a Skype client for BB OS. That would work in unrestricted way. Wouldn't it?
