In Search Of Media Player Alternative

i have searched the forums and it seems like xplayer is a good alternative to the BB media player.
i downloaded xplayer since it has a long list of supported formats.
i am trying to play a mp4 on my curve. i have transferred the file selecting "convert for optimal playback" and "copy with no conversion". either way all i get is video.
i have removed and readded xplayer from my phone and getting the same results.

i'm not getting any error messages when i open either of the videos.
audio files play without any problems.

any ideas?
