I want to see what applications are running so I . . .

hold down the alt key then hit the backspace key

what happens is I get a quick look (like 2 seconds) at what looks like 4-5 icons in the middle of the screen then an app will launch and with each alt+backspace the app that launches changes.

I know it has to be something I'm doing wrong.
I have the latest OS for the curve, 4.5.0.110

Once you have the running apps up, if you scroll to one and
release the ALT key, the app you stopped on will open.

The 5 that will always be in the list are: Messages, Home, BBM,
Browser and Call Logs. They cannot be closed.

The position of the icons will change based on what you open.
The last app you open will be the last in the list the next
    time you view it.

You have to hold the alt key. Use the trackball to navigate. That only switches between applications though...

I'm glad you asked this, I was having the same problem. No one said you had to keep holding the ALT key down...
