Google Dashes Hopes of Free iPhone Turn-by-Turn GPS - PCWorld
edit: I know it says iPhone in the article, but read it through before replying.
Yeah, if you feel like paying 10 bucks a month for life, scam and ripoff if ya ask me.
I use VZ Nav, and its by far the best GPS turn by turn on any phone that out there. Well worth the money for this GPS
I agree with you, but sigh some people speak from ignorance, its the best phone GPS out there. But the comment is correct it is renting. Just loke your cell phone service.

Personally "LifeInPocket" does me just fine and still has "turn by turn" with voice, $120.00 bucks a year isn't worth "Pretty Graphics" to me anyway. Now if it was a one time fee, I would consider. :D
I have LifeInPocket, and it's a really cool app, but when I'm travelling around the country I have to know I have a GPS that I can depend on. Now we all know GPSs aren't infallible and I always get a map of the area, however, VZNAV has never failed me, while testing with LIP it has misguided me around my home turf.
So it's worth the $120 to know I have a reliable service, that I rarely have to look at the screen. Besides VZNAV is a business expense. :-D
The only problem I have with VZNAV besides the price is that when I was in an area without cell service it didn't work. With my Navman from Radio Shack, I paid once and it works nicely by satellite. Of course, there is the issue of no map upgrades yet. But I'll take that over getting stranded in an area without cell service.
Not that I'm disagreeing with anything your saying, it's just that the "majority" of us don't have that option. ;)
I have tried VZ Nav, and the only problem that I ran into with it is when a call comes in and VZ Nav gives a voice direction update it cuts out the speaker of the phone call and basically the call is lost.
As for LifeInPocket, nice app but when I was 121 miles away from my destination LifeInPocket told me that I have arrived at my destination. Now you explain that?
I would certainly like to see Google Maps w/Nav as a friend of mine has a Droid w/it and he loves that app.
We're both on S2 v 607, are you using the latest version of VZNAV? I do not have any issues making or receiving phone calls. Maybe that is because I use a bluetooth headset. With the BT headset it works like a charm.
Only you can determine how your disposable income serves you. And whether you give up your Starbucks latte to pay for a month of VZNAV for $10, or going to the movies or whatever. Anybody who pays for a cell phone bill who does not have a spare $9.99, is seriously mismanaging their money.
I'm not saying VZNAV is the perfect product for everybody, but if you like the product then get it. I pay $3000/year or so for my cell phones, an extra $120/year even before I was able to deduct it as a business expense was worth it.
Back on topic to OP's "prediction" . . . . . . maybe I would've named this thread:
"I'm hoping that Google Maps will have turn-by-turn (voice) directions for the Blackberry by June 30, 2010"
I "hope" so too. Would love to have this on my BB. I've seen this app work on droid devices. . . . pretty awesome for a free app.
IMO if your paying 29.99 for data on a smart phone they should include GPS. that's why i love Sprint and my free turn by turn Telenav GPS.
Yes I have the latest ver. of VZ Nav.

Very informative post, i am new to this forum site.
GPS is free, it's the program that Verizon makes you pay for. There are clearly other alternatives to VZNAV, like LifeInPocket. That is free/beta and uses your unlimited data plan.
or just buy a one-time charge standalone Nav program:
BB- Garmin
iphone- Navigon, Tomtom, Copilot, Magellan, etc
WM- same as iphone for the most part
If you want to complain about the $9.99/mo, then any of the above nav programs will cost you less than a year of the carrier service AND dont need carrier data. Key if youre out driving in the boonies etc (no one gets service 100% of the time everywhere)
I dont find the gps programs that need data to work very appealing which includes these carrier services and Google Navigation. If youre out in the farmland or mountains and cant get cell signal, oh well I guess having gps doesnt help you find your way. Its kind of silly to pay that much and have to worry if you have signal.
Sure, google Nav caches the route, but if you go one literal step off the route it needs to recalculate it needs to pull data again. And lets face it when youre really lost following the route exactly 1) isnt easy; and 2) sometimes isnt ideal to get back to where you know you are.
The whole point of true gps after all is to help you when your lost (really lost), not around the block from your house where you know you have full signal! But to be able to pull out your gps and use is no matter where you are, not only if you have cell signal/data connection.
1) Moved from News and Rumors to 3rd Party Applications.
2) I have always hated Google Maps. I use Garmin Mobile and
quite honestly I doubt if Google will ever match the feature set.
People have different requirements. I do not want to carry around mutliple devices. While there are some times I'm out in the farmlands, mountains or without a signal, it's hard not to have a signal within most major metropolitan areas. For the number of times I don't have a signal I'll have a rented car. All car rental companies will rent you a gps these days, so I'll just rent it. If I need a dedicated GPS I'll get it, but I'll still use VZNAV because it's portable and works as well as most high-end units and I don't have to worry about obsolescence.
There is a difference between hoping something will happen and predicting it will.
