CrackBerry is Under New Ownership and Relaunching in 2022 Beyond BlackBerry - Read All About It!
[Open Beta] SpeedNotes - A fast and convenient note taking application
- That is strange... deleting an app is supposed to delete the persistent storage associated with it, which is where the note and options are stored.08-25-11 08:25 PMLike 0

- Okay, I loaded up that new volatile and everything works BUT the send to SMS. It loads the note into the SMS convo box at the bottom, but it gives no recipient choices. I also saved it as a Memo and then subsequently loaded it back in from that memo, works perfectly!! I am psyched08-25-11 10:01 PMLike 0

Those SMS API's seem to be proper busted in several OS versions... I'm going to code some kind of workaround.08-25-11 10:58 PMLike 0 - Newest Volatile is working great for me.
Looks almost done manIt's already better than many other apps I've had.

I am so easily amused.08-26-11 08:07 AMLike 0 -
Only major hurdles for me at the moment are the annoying SMS bug, which I think I'm just going to have to code my own system that uses the alternate more direct SMS API's and the save to file dialog code which I'm working on at the moment. I'm not new to programming by any means, I got started with Sinclair BASIC at the tender age of 11 (30 years ago! ouch!) but I'm still very new to java (I love this language!) and finding my way around the RIM API's.ba_hamilton likes this.08-26-11 10:10 AMLike 1 - Thanks for the kind and encouraging words!

So far, Russ, the latest is working great. I'm back making more notes than I know what to do with. As you stated the SMS bug is still there but otherwise its excellent. Thank you again for working so hard on this.

SpeedNotes began as an app that addressed a need I had personally, I've always detested paper and like the idea of using the convenience of my BlackBerry for taking and storing notes of all kinds. MemoPad gets the job done, but always seemed inconvenient in as much as having to create a new empty note and name it each time I wanted to record something. Often, I find myself wanting to record something quickly and then return to whatever I'm doing and be able to come back to it later without a) remembering to save and b) having to leave an application open. Sometimes I would also want to take notes that I didn't need to keep permanently either.
SpeedNotes addresses this need by providing an instant and persistent note taking environment where immediately upon launching the app you are presented with a note area, ready for typing into. SpeedNotes takes care of ensuring your notes are saved to your BB's storage as you are working on them and loading the current note into the note area as soon as SpeedNotes is launched. Effectively, you can launch SpeedNotes, enter some information, then just press ESC to close the application. Later, you can launch SpeedNotes again and your note will be automatically loaded back into the application.
When your note is complete, you have several choices:
- Clear the note and start again.
- Save or send the note to a variety of different destinations, such as MemoPad, email, SMS, PIN message, Calendar, Tasks.
- Copy the note to your BlackBerry's clipboard.
The purpose of this open beta is to gather opinions on the usability of the app and to collect feedback reference it's further development before submitting it for sale. At the close of the beta, I will gratefully provide free copies of the app to anyone that provides useful input or feedback.

You can download SpeedNotes OTA 0.2.4 beta OTA at the below link:

If you are feeling brave, you can also download the current volatile build at the following location, although you should be aware that this build represents the current status of my progress towards the next version and may be in any state from completely broken to working, you can view the changelog entries below for the current volatile build to understand the approximate state of the volatile build, however, just because a change is listed under the current volatile's progress doesn't necessarily mean that it's available in the OTA yet. I will also post when a new volatile is uploaded. In shorter words, use at your own risk!:

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com08-27-11 09:47 AMLike 0 - - I have Version 0.3.0-volatile beta installed on my Bold 9900. Every time I open the speed notes the cursor is at the top, can you put it at the bottom (last row) where I stopped writing the note?
- From options I checked "insert date stamp on new note". Then I exit the app and never able to open it again. I had to reinstall the app.08-27-11 12:38 PMLike 0 -

Looks like you were hit by the same bug Sam found. That's was fixed in the latest 0.3.0 volatile so it shouldn't happen again.
Ill definitely be adding something in line with the first issue you mentioned soon.

If it's the wont launch, please try deleting the app then rebooting and re-installing the volatile. If it still does it, please can you take a look into the event log and see if there are any entries for speednotes? They should be in bold.
Thanks!
Russ.08-28-11 04:34 PMLike 0 - This is very true. I use SN to write all my memos, calendar entries, tasks and to start a vast majority of my emails, too. This has simplified the way I write everything on my Berry now. I even use just the notes page to keep short term reminders on. It is truly a "SuperApp" if you ask me!08-28-11 06:38 PMLike 0
- Are you talking about the "wont launch" bug or the cursor position?

Russ.08-28-11 10:53 PMLike 0 - Update on 0.3.0 beta.
The code for saving notes to a file is almost complete, the majority of the work here has been in building an object for picking a save location and name along with the ability to create new folders for categorizing them on your media card etc. Its been a good learning experience.
I should be releasing the new beta tomorrow at the latest and will also extend the beta timeout date, which is currently set for September 1st.
