Third-party apps be damned as Google is getting ready to launch the official Google Voice application for both Android and BlackBerry platforms. We knew it was coming of course — it was just a matter of when. The news comes straight from the mouth of Google Voice’s Vincent Paquet who says the application will not only allow Google Voice users to place calls on their devices and have recipients’ calls display the Google Voice number, but it will also make it possible to view voicemail transcripts within the application as opposed to through the mobile web. Unfortunately, no word on SMS integration. We do have to wonder when the company plans to finish off the massive backlog of invites and maybe even open the service up to the public. Oh and while GV Mobile has done a terrific job of tiding us over on the iPhone, we’re definitely anxious to see if Google can match its functionality or even exceed it (push notifications for SMS and voicemails?) with its own app.

You do need your google invite code to use.

BlackBerry app is now available for OTA download

It's free if you set as a My Favs or friends and family number. Otherwise it uses minutes just like calling out of network.

The Google Voice app sends SMS free using data, however, receiving SMS will incur normal charges.

It has a drawback in my opinion, It cannot be the default call handler. It requires you to dial through your contacts, GVdialer will set itself as the default handler if you let it. I hope Google implements a similar feature

I still don't understand the point of this app.

I thought google voice would be VoiP, but if it's not, someone please enlighten me as to why anyone would even bother if it uses your minutes for call use (ok, barring anyone who chooses to add to F&F list).

This is awesome because it allows you to place outbound calls using your google voice number.

Plus, it works just as good as GV Dialer, if not better. If you want to call from Google Voice, just open the app and dial.

How do you set GVD to be the default handler? Or can you only do this after you've purchased it and not with the 30-day trial version?

when i dial from the app, the incoming # is not my GV number... but when i dial from the web, the incoming is my GV number. anyone else getting this? reason being, i want my incoming and outgoing # to be the same so that i can add 1 number as a favorite # to get unlimited calling.

also, the SMS for GV is a bit lacking. double tapping space doesnt bring up period, although you can now send 160+ texts which is a huge plus

With GVDialer go to settings>Use GVdialer>then choose your option... either On all my calls, On international calls, On domestic calls, Ask me on every call, or Off... And yes it works during the 30 day trial.
