    Hi guys,

i'm doing another comparison of the various (cross) mobile platform messengers available for BlackBerry.

This time i'm taking a different approach, i will send my chart to the creators of the apps i'm reviewing and allowing them to comment on it before i post it here, so stay tuned.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Apps compared:

    -BBM
    Made by RIM, Canada HQ.

    -Hookt
Made by airG Inc., Canada HQ.

    -WhatsApp
Made by WhatsApp Inc., California HQ.

    -LiveProfile
Made by LiveProfile, Inc., Delaware based, presumably not operational anymore
(facebook & twitter dead since august 2011, safe to assume it's dead )

    -Lucid Messenger
    Made by Lucid Technologies LLC,
(safe to assume it's dead )

    -Touch
Made by Enflick Inc., Canada HQ.

    -Kik
Made by Kik Interactive, Inc., Canada HQ.

    -PingMe
Made by RadiumOne, Inc., San Francisco HQ.

    -Kakaotalk
Made by Kakao Corporation, Korea based
    Extremely popular in Asia

    -Fast Society
Officially dead. Source: Fast Society. Built to Party.

    -GroupMe
Made by GroupMe, Inc., acquired by Skype, New York city HQ.

    -H! Hello
Made by Standard IM, Inc., South Carolina HQ.

    -CnectD
Made by MCI Consultants (Pty) Ltd., South Africa HQ.

If you know of any other app that should be reviewed/compared by all means let me know but do not submit an app listed below as i will not admit it.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Contacted app creators on 11th of april 2012, they have 1 week to respond or be deemed "dead".

    -Hookt support@hookt.com
    -WhatsApp support@whatsapp.com
-LiveProfile Removed from appworld, presumed dead, Will be reviewed since it's still available for download
-Lucid Messenger No finished app for BlackBerry, WILL NOT BE REVIEWED
    -Touch bizdev@enflick.com; feedback@touch.com
    -Kik press@kik.com
    -PingMe press@pingme.net
    -Kakaotalk talkhelp@kakao.com
-Fast Society App no longer available, WILL NOT BE REVIEWED
    -GroupMe groupmepr@brewpr.com
    -H! Hello support@hellomessenger.com
    -CnectD support@cnectd.com

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following apps will not be admitted:

    -Nimbuzz
    -IM+
    -Googletalk
    -Windows Messenger
    -Yahoo Messenger
    -AIM
    -IMO
    -Meebo
    -Beejive
    -Trillian
    -Facebook Messenger

The reason for not admitting these are because they rely on social networks to function or just consolidate several third party networks in one app.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the criteria, BBM is the "control app". If you think of any new criteria or spot an error please notify me in this thread

What do you mean when you say that googletalk, yahoo, aim, and wlm rely on social networks to function?

    Can't find it in appworld...

I mean that there is a clear distinction between the messengers i'm comparing and the ones i'm leaving out.

The ones you mention are all derived from desktop clients. I'm comparing the ones build from scratch and purely for the mobile platform.
If you want you can always expand the chart once i post it...

The chart will be posted later today.

Liveprofile is presumed dead, the app is no longer available for download in Appworld.
Lucid Messenger is presumed dead, there has never been an app for BlackBerry and development on the messenger has been halted.
Fast Society is officially dead. The app is no longer available for download.

    Why is it an exception?

Cause it used to be in there before it was removed by RIM cause a former BBM programmer created it.

So it was removed only for some political reason, and that's why it's included in this study?

It was removed because of an alleged breach of patents if i recall correctly.
