How to get google sync & maps working over BIS (without APN)
- Fellow Blackberry users and abusers; perhaps a sticky??
Like many of you out there I struggled to get googlesync and googlemaps to work over BIS. I had to enter the APN setting of my carrier (T-mobile Netherlands) to get these apps to work on my Bold. When I did this I found my carrier was charging me for data, while I have an unlimmited BIS plan with internet. They claimed I had to remove the APN settings to get all data into my BIS plan, but unfortunatelly I found that the google apps stopped working with the error "data connection required". While I am addicted to my berry and try to use it to its full potential (but allergic to additional carrier costs) I was very frustrated....
After many hours on google I found a lot of people experiencing the same problems without finding a solution. Google forums did not show a solution neither did the forums from my carrier. They all know about this problems and my carrier claims to be working on a solution..... Yeahh right!
In the mean time I found the solution, somewhere deep in a forum. I didn't find this out on my own, Im just sharing this info with you.... to the finder of this solution, thanks man you're my hero !!!!!!
First my setup;
Bold running on OS5.238
Unlimited BIS + internetplan ( t-mobile instant email)
Googlesync (current) version 0.5.15
Googlemaps (current) version 3.2.1
Step by step guide;
1) Uninstall the googlesync and googlemaps both from your Bold. After this do a battery pull.
2) Remove all APN settings ( if you have them), uncheck the box in options > advanced options > TCP/IP
2) After reboot, install the above mentioned applications OTA from the m.google.com. I have only tried this with the current versions, so I dont know how older versions might respond. Just let the apps install and give the apps all permissions when the Bols asks this after install. DO NOT run the apps!!
3) Go to; options > advanced options > hostrouting table > menu > register now. Let the Bold register again to its service, you should get a message when this is done.
4) When step 3 is done, go to your BIS site. Resend the servicebooks to your device. You should get an email on your emailaccounts when this is done.
5) Time for yet again a battery pull. Restart the bold. Time to try if step 1-4 have worked. Try google maps and googlesync. It should find the BIS connection now. The apps should work now without APN settings!
Please note that the above steps are on your own risk. I got mine working just fine now. Regarding the additional data charges; I am still waiting for my new invoice to check if all additional data charges are gone. According to the setup now, all data should be within my BIS plan and more inportantly Im syncing my agenda and finding my way on maps! Unfortunatelly no (not yet) guarantees people...
I hope this helps for you as it did for me..... good luck people!!Last edited by cornholio_nl; 11-11-09 at 05:39 PM.
