I have a Curve 8520 (my brothers) which is a total mess!

The phone is always hanging we can barley use it, I am trying to back up the phone in order to wipe it and update it but I am unable to. Also, i am getting the App error 200.

I have been trying to backup the phone but i am unable as it hangs in the middle of the process!

I need a way to back up the phone (it was never backed up) in order to be able to wipe it, update it and restore it again.

Can someone help?

If the device is going into App Error 200, you can't back it up before updating. This is why you should always back up. However, anything saved to your SD card won't get wiped during an update, so some files will be saved. You'll lose SMS & MMS, your contacts and all your applications, however. There is no way to Back-up now, the time has passed.

you can try to boot the phone into "safe mode" - KB17877-How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in safe mode

safe mode boots the phone with the minimum amount of applications, and zero 3rd party apps. (similar to safe mode in windows) this might allow you to actually boot the phone and get a back-up.
