I have heard two different answers to this one. Does the official Google Talk app from RIM use SMS for instant messages or does it count toward your unlimited data plan? If it uses SMS, is there a free client out there that uses data? Am I seeing different responses because it varies by phone or carrier? I have a Bold with AT&T.

It uses data. Every messenger I know about on the BlackBerrys is the same too. AIM, MSN, BBM, and GTalk.

I thought it was data, but some users were saying it used SMS on another thread.

DATA, easy way to confirm, turn off your radio and leave wi-fi on. you will still be able to use gtalk. sms uses the radio and if turned off and gatlk used sms, it wouldn't work.
