I'm on an S2 and this version does not work very well at all. You have to use it in compatibility mode in order for the map to even scan and move. You can't zoom in or out and the keyboard doesn't work at all.
Google Maps 4.5.2 works properly on a Storm/Storm2, but you have to ensure your browser identification is set to BlackBerry, not Firefox or Internet Explorer, when downloading, and that compatibility mode is disabled.
I changed my router's mac address, then logged into google maps, and suddenly I was thousands of miles away in another state! That lasted for a few months until they updated their database again so I'll be changing it again soon.
As a test for yourself, disable your BB wifi and then open google maps. You will see the normal cell tower triangulation method, then the GPS lock eventually.
I am currently/temporarily using 4.5.2 on my 8830 (sans wifi) and it locates quicker than it did before the update.

I'm signed into my account and when i press enter on a location there no longer is a star in the upper right corner and i can't seem to find any other option to add the location as a favorite (starred location).

I'm having the same problem with 4.5.2..."Your Location" bubble won't disappear. I've used many versions of Google maps in the past, this version (I think) is the first to display this annoying bug.

Mine disappears if I touch a different point on the map. (sorry just noticed you have 9700)
Have you tried to fix by removing and reinstalling Google Maps?

If you touch (move) a different part of the map, the map no longer "follows" you.
And yes, I've already re-downloaded and re-installed 4.5.2.
