I used Google Maps on a 2-hour trip yesterday and it worked just fine. The only time it didn't track was when it lost the signal in the mountains.

Stellar! Thank guys for replies. I used the 8350 briefly when it first came out and didn't work well with gmaps and wanted to make sure the 9650 did so this time before I got it.

worked very well on the 6 hour trip i took the other day. i find it better than Sprint Nav...as Sprint Nav feels the need to tell me that it lost GPS signal, only to say 4-5 seconds later it found it.

Will this work for the Verizon 9650 though? Or will we be stuck with the crappy VZNav?

Hope it works well for Verizon's 9650. Using Google Maps on my 8330 is the pits. The GPS chip is locked. I have to use cell tower location. It tracks my location within 2100 to 3100 meters. So it's basically useless. It's also slow. I'm hoping it'll be faster and better on the 9650.

This version of Google Maps works over WiFi. That is great news.

to be more specific, when you have google maps open, the gps kicks in and your position is more precise. when you put it in the background, cell tower triangulation kicks in and your location is less precise (this was with 4.0.2 anyway, just updated to 4.2)
