Okay, so I am attempting this for the first time - how do I get all my apps and data from my old phone to the new? I am familiar with backing up and restoring on a single phone, but not with going between phones....

Data is easy. Just use the Device Switch Wizard in DM.

Apps: if you purchased via App World or the CB Store you can log
into you account and change devices to get a new code.

If they were purchased directly from the developer, send them
    an email with:
    1) The app name
    2) The original device model and PIN
    3) The new device model and PIN. Most will help you out.

Any app that does not require a registration / unlock code will
simply need to be re-downloaded on the new device as the
screen size between the two phones are different.

Thanks - helpful to know I will need to redownload apps. Any way to preserve data within the apps?

That tends to be hit or miss.

For me Yahoo IM saves my settings. Other apps like WeatherEye,
BBTran, File Manager Pro, FlipSide, etc all need to be reset or at
least need to have the registration / unlock code re-entered.
I have a memo saved with all of that so I can usually run through
the whole process in 3 minutes or so.

All my apps are free I am more concerned about keeping the data I have built up/configured within the apps

Then you'll be fine. At worst you may have to download the app
specifically formatted for the 8900. Your data will be just fine.

Thanks - how do I actually go about transferring the data?

Do you have both phones or just the 8900?

Nevermind. I just read your first post. Just open DM, connect the
8900, click Backup / Restore and then Restore. Point to your last
backup and let DM work it's mojo.

So backup/restore can work across different phones and phone types? What is device switch wizard for then?

Not a problem. Do a backup now. When you get the new one in
your hot little hands follow the procedure I posted and you
    should be all set.

Yes, since it only involves data. Data is data, regardless of the device.

The Device Switch Wizard is the best way, but it requires you have both
phones at the same time. Essentially, when the process is complete the
two devices will be "clones" of each other (from a data standpoint)
