Yeah, the Facebook application needs to connect to the internet in order to actually function. The Facebook app doesn't work through WiFi, but if you had WiFi, you could visit the Facebook site in the browser. So, if you want to use the FB app, it will require that you connect to the internet.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
