That is a problem with facebook itself making changes to the privacy settings not the app. I can tell you how to fix it. This is what I had to do, go into fb app, click bb button, options, then sign out. once you sing back in, the pic will show up. Has worked for me everytime.
And I guess peeps forgot that is 1.6 you could not like things, would also not work with people with iphones, and could not view links or pics people posted in their newsfeed.
I tried your method, but unfortunately it didn't work. Did you do a restart at all before you sign back in to the FB app?
